I Was the Reluctant Lover

I Was the Reluctant Lover

A Poem by Tomás Ó Cárthaigh
"

Valentines poem about a girl I adored that I worked with but never had the guts to ask out! Faint heart, it is true, wins not the fair lady...

"

I was the reluctant lover
She was a Goddess divine
I was not as brave as a man should be
And so her heart was never mine

Oh, am I the fool of legend
Am I the only one
Who loved and lost as I never tossed
My hat in the ring till the girl was gone?

And as I look at the picture
Her face and smile come to mind
May we always find a beautiful memory of another
Though we may never meet another of their kind.

I was that hunter with his dogs
Who left the lady sitting naked and alone
To hunt for all the vanities of life
And lost the lady he desired as his own.

A hunter hunts for glory and alone
And relishes the company of his hound
But the greatest hunt is of the heart
And for me will the quarry ever be found?

Should she again come into my range
Then with arrows and hounds I shall descend
And stop the hunt, and run the hounds
And maybe for me be a happy end?

I'm sure that you're not the only one who has lacked the front to approach one who is fascinating to us, and have thus lost the opportunity to discover whether she is the one, or not. Nicely read in your Irish brogue.
(But seriously, if you really did leave her naked and alone - what the hell were you thinking of, man??? )

I love the reading and the poem though I am sure you are not alone in having adored from afar. I love how the poems I have read come off as old fashioned when I read them.

This is such a wonderful poem, love should be said out, love said and lost is better than love never said.... And its never too late to express what you feel...

such a heart felt poem, almost like a sonnet. i really thought i was reading Shakespeare for a moment :P everyone has had someone they desired secretly but lacked the courage to approach them, fear thee not Thomas. If it is meant to be then your paths will surely cross once again and then you can "Stop the hunt, and run the hounds" and get that happy ending of yours ;)

I guess we all have been in this kind of situation at one time in our life. Many of us do not have the guts to admit it though, let alone write a poem about their feelings. That is really brave!
The fact that you recite your poetry makes the feelings and emotions that go with it even more vivid.
A great job

The metor is wonderful but the rhym can break the flow. That being said the image is very high and carries the work past the rhym. I like the story and would say that is is better to have loved and lost than never have loved at all.

the smallest of regrets can reach such a magnitude, but losing
love is the worse. very well said.
