We have a monthly event in Tullamore, the “Scene of the Rhyme”, and this month and last month was disturbed by a couple of drunks, who took from the enjoyment for most of the rest, alas… so this satire is dedicated to them, who must realise there being no more kings, the bar room is as much for the bards as for the drinkers!

Bards of today, heckled, by the critical ear
That drinking, poetry does not want to hear
Cant handle poetry, that they know
Cant handle drink, that they show
The empty buckets rattle loud
Seeks the common ear of the rattled crowd
Failing to find, are not aware
They alone are the only fool there
That calls the bards fools who read each line
Strange, as the bar is the idiots shrine,
Not the banqueting hall of the kings
To which this night some culture brings.

Sounds like quite a night. You have communicated the scene very well here...how frustrating! As you say, you brought a bit of culture to an unruly bunch even if they don't acknowledge it. Perhaps, there are some unfulfilled bards in that drunken group who may remember your words and gathering and take heart. A few knocks of life can bring out the hidden poet in many.

Nicely captured and a lively night too by the sounds of it. Love the idiot's shrine part, how true that is.
Sorry your night got disturbed, but at least you had the vision to write about it, so it wasn't a complete bust :)

we get heckled in more than just bars---drinkers are more understood than we bards---but we fight through it, and we write through it.

this is both amusing and true...love it.
