Libraries Burned

Libraries Burned

A Poem by Tomás Ó Cárthaigh
"

The cottage I was doing up at Ballinamuck burned down on the May Day bank holiday weekend. I am now starting the restoration...

"

Devoured by flame, hopes and dreams,
Not destroyed, no, but delayed
As if an old man died, the library burned
Phoenixlike it will be made
In time rise from the ashes there
Where brittle burned paper blows in the breeze
Smokes smell hangs putrid in the air
Where the air is blocked by trees
That wont allow the chimneys to draw,
When in the grate was the fire…
Yet by horrid twist of cruel fate,
When the house ablaze, drove the flames higher...

Another way you can help, as all the books of my libnrary built up over the last 20 years are gone, if you want to send a copy of one of yours for the new library to me at Tom Carty, 13 Church Street, Tullamore, Offaly, Ireland, that would be brilliant! :-) )

i am sorry for this loss you endure .. but its your hope and expectations for the rebuild that pronounce themselves the loudest .. i assume that no one was hurt in the fire ??! is that correct? i read up a little on Ballinamuck .. what an incredible place!! my great grandfather was from County Donegal .. visiting has always been in my bucket list .. again .. so sorry for these challenges ahead .. perhaps you can keep us posted on the progress .. love and peace

Sorry this beautiful poem was inspired by such a tragic event. How horrible. Heart-wrenching picture.

Wonderful flow and rhythm.

Very best regards,

Rick

Oh my goodness - what devastating news this is. I can't imagine. I have a small book, just a few cardboard backed pages bound with a spiral binder - it was my dad's baby book. it wasn't fire - but black mold that destroyed it. This mold also ushered in my dad's decline from COPD. Its only one book but the ache of losing the images is palpable. to lose an entire library....wow.

I like this a lot. Well written. This writing almost feels like a allegory about the memory of a person's life who has past away.

I wish it were just an allegory. Still, we soldier on...
there will always be books...the lost ones replaced, the library will rise from the ashes, be rebuilt...and we will read on.
nicely done.
