Culture on A Cigarette Packet

Culture on A Cigarette Packet

A Poem by Tomás Ó Cárthaigh
"

hOW i DISCOVERED THE WRITINGS OF rOBBIE bURNS

"

====================================
Culture from a Cigarette Packet
====================================

Words I read of Aftons waters
Green braes and other lines of Burns the bard,
On a packet of cigarettes
What funny places culture throws her card!

And from there more of Burns I read,
The more of his writings to read I desired,
For I am a poet, though not as good as he
I was and am by him inspired.

Culture from a cigarette packet...
Crazy the idea some wil call,
But I say its better be crazy
Than to get no culture at all!

That's pretty cool how you discovered Burns! It's not strange; just a unique way of finding him.

I liked the lines:

"Words I read of Aftons waters

On a packet of cigarettes
What funny places culture throws her card!"

Very cool!

culture on a cigarette packet indeed .. and hippies found God in bubble gum wrappers as well .. closing lines really make this poem for me .. have to investigate Robbie Burns and Afton wafers .. ignorant as i am :)

Ah.... and who said smoking is bad for your health:)? Nice poem and the unexpected too..., though I am not one, this is a boost for the rights of smokers... and why not? Only if there were as many poets..

my favorite line.

I liked how inspiration can come from anywhere. In a way, it should.

Wonderful form, great flow, well chosen words, well painted imagery, well imparted message.

This is a great piece.

I say any culture is good culture.

I can't recall how I came to know the writings of the Poet. Though some of my strongest memories involve Burns in lyric form. Singing "Auld Lang Syne" at New Years. Singing "Comin Through the Rye" to Anna when she can't sleep.

Literature on a cigarette wrapper. That idea has me blown away.

Tomas I love this. What a wonderful way to find him. You couldn't do that here in the states that's for sure. This was a lovely read and thank you so much for sharing it.
