Damocles Knew

Damocles Knew

A Poem by Tobes

This meager language and
pitiful syntax
never begin to measure
the weight of this absolute
with
every cliché:
waves, wings, wind, wishes
falling metaphorically short
with failure to convey
the all-consuming nature
of being all-in...
opening up, giving away,
placing all bets--
with starry-eyed, excited fear,
and brilliant love
on a beautiful heart
suspended,
massy and near
above the head, over the hopes
by the barest thread
of goodbye.

You had me through to the last line. I was whisked away on the tendrils of your airy words. And then? Goodbye. Ouchy. Fitting title and reminder of never giving away a single moment.
