Dear OpheliaA Poem by Tobias ÅdinMy interpretation of Shakespeare's Ophelia. A character that has been done a great injustice; Ophelia is worthy of humanity. She will be silenced no more.
Dear Ophelia,
What have you seen in your days? Oh, what horrors have you witnessed, I wonder, For you to descend into such beautiful madness? For it's always beautiful; erotic, even. Alas, humanity has been unkind to you. You became the very archetype of mad womanhood. Turned into an erotic fascination of our own mortality, Never having the voice to protest. Oh Ophelia, my dear friend. How I wish, oh how I wish, That the world had been kind. You were more than just an archetype. You were a human. There was no beauty in your death, But there was power in your madness. To them, you were but a nuisance, an enigma. But to me, you were more. You were an unspoken hero, Your legacy tainted by the male gaze and morbid thoughts. Ophelia, my friend. You have always been, to me, A woman of strength and humanity. Your madness was a thing of power, A thing of awe! Your death was tragic, And your life untold. But your legacy must live on. You shall be silenced no more. © 2017 Tobias ÅdinAuthor's Note
