The Addicts Pledge

An encouraging poem written for a friends continuing battle with addiction.

You may follow me down broken roads.
You may watch me twist and sweat.

You can wrap me up in shame and guilt.
You can beat me with regrets .

You can stalk me till the day I die.
You may never let me go.

You may say that I belong to you.
You can say "I need you so."

You can hunt me
You can chase me
You can laugh until I cry
You can whisper in my ear that,
I might as well just die

Yes, you dragged me down this road before
You filled my heart with pain.
You took away from others,
Their trust in me, their faith.

This road will be a struggle.
I will have to fight to win.
I may lose a couple battles in
This war that never ends.

So..
Gloves on
Fists up
Ring the bell
Let the fight begin.
You can knock me to the mat
But...
I will never
Just give in.
