One Too Many

One Too Many

A Poem by Tkess

The gigolo’s jumpin’ routines

Down the purple morning avenue

And the stars aren’t winking

They’ve gone stark raving mad

Staring down the winos

Careful not to spill a drop

And I’m looking for a miracle worker

With black lace and porcelain white skin

The bouncers ain’t looking for too much

Just enough to get ya in

Gave it my best shot

Then I had two more

See the world through a shot glass

Just-a listen to the score

I don’t know who you think you are

Baby, but yain’t nuttin’ new

Just the same old song bird

Singing that same old tune

The audience is just mumbling

Like they are talking through cellophane

This place is picking up

Like three sheets in a hurricane

The jukebox is playing some barfruit blues

And I’m still mulling over yesterday’s news

Casanova’s in the corner

And he’s just looking for some touch

Maybe a brunette with daddy issues

He ain’t asking for much

Nobody’s listening to the bar band

‘cause they ain’t got nuttin’ to say

“It’s gonna be one of those nights,”

But I say that every goddamn day

Bloodshot red eyes ‘neath the neon blue

As the canary piss yellow taxis drift down the avenue

And as my thoughts drift back to you

It’s last call, but I’ve been done for years

So I guess I’ll have one more beer
