Drink Life Straight No Chaser

Drink Life Straight No Chaser

A Poem by Tkess

Alcohol monologues

Told to street curb gutters

Police cars screaming

Obscenities from

Blacked out alleys

Cigarette smoke clouds

The heavens from

Our indiscretions

Criminals picked from the streets

Lobotomy for the city, or

Whatever helps you sleep

The bars have become our sanctuary

The songs our psalms

Of love and beauty,

Broken hearts and one too many

The songs spill out into

The streets and alleyways

Out of our hearts and car speakers

None of us saints, but

We are not entirely sinners

We hover somewhere between

We shake off hangovers

And piece together the night

Like an abstract jigsaw puzzle

Excellent! I feel like I have lived inside of this poem

"The heavens from our indiscretions.." My favorite line. I have definately felt the ultimate thrill and heaven on earth from things that aren't heavenly at all.

You grabbed me in the title and held me in the reading--just a small peek into your soul--so much of all of us there with you. Loved this piece!

This could easily describe a night lived by the Three Musketeers from "The Hangover". You have the urban vein of poetry down to an art form.

Worthy title. Winning poem. Feels like Bukowski and a long dirty drag from a cigarette in the night, as 'we hover somewhere between'. 'Alcohol monologues' are a familiar friend. Jack's quote is a welcomed touch. Bring on the night.
