Grapefruit moon,
a million stars looking down at me.
I heard that tune,
you know the one I mean.
The one we listened to
in my old Chevy,
in the dark corner of the park.
every time I hear that chorus
something clenches inside of me.
We never had a destination
so I can't say it ended too soon.
You became my inspiration,
but my poems were never about you.
Now I smoke my cigarettes
and laugh at my naivety,
and I slip into the dawn
like a million stars into obscurity.
I stare at that grapefruit moon
and a million stars now laugh with me.
