Screams Of The Fallen

Screams Of The Fallen

A Chapter by TinyWriter

Veda woke up under warm blankets and a cool cloth against her forehead. Her head held a small heartbeat, each that riddled with a slight pang and her mouth was dry. She tried to speak, but it came out raspy, as if she had been smoking since she was twelve.

"Stay down Veda." Jean spoke, making the brunette feel a little more at ease, but there was a hurt in her voice that pained Veda to hear.

"What happened?" She spoke softly, trying not to strain her voice.

"You were shot by a dart with some kind of drug that knocked you out. It's been a about two hours. I'm glad your back in the life of the living."

"Barely. Do you have any water?"

"Here, drink out of the straw, but don't move too much." Veda opened her eyes and saw that Jean had heavy bags under hers, accompanied by red puffy eyes that sat above the dark circles.

"Are you alright?" Veda asked. She wasn't exactly friends with Jean, but she still cared.

"It's best if Finn or Tryston told you."

"Is it Addy?" Veda asked, awaiting the worst possible outcome. Jean just shook her head and looked down.

"Get some rest Veda. I'll be right back okay?"

"I've gotten enough rest, I want to know what happened." Veda pushed. "Where's Iris, she'll tell me."

Jeans lips quivered at the mentioning of Iris' name. "She's gone."

"What do you mean gone?"

"She never made it back from the last supply run."

Veda couldn't believe what she was hearing. "What do you mean? She carried me back to the car! She was right in front of me!"

"She was bit and chose to be left behind."

"That's bullshit!" She shouted. Veda's memory was foggy, but she could've sworn that Iris was there. "I want to see her!" Veda tried getting up, but felt dizzy the moment she tried. "What the hell?"

"You are still weak, you need rest."

"Not until I hear it from-" Her sentence was cut short, she could feel her heart beat in her whole body and it was starting to slow. "What is happening to me?"

"I gave you something to help you relax, just a back up  in case you acted like, well, this."

"Iris is dead and you expected me to be calm!" Veda tried her best to fight the medicine in her system, but it eventually got the best of her as she fell back asleep.

"Where are you taking me?" Veda asked, hoping she could get something out of Iris.

"I told you six times already, it's a surprise." She smiled.

"I don't like surprises."

Iris just intertwined their fingers and turned the the volume up using the switch on the steering wheel. Veda couldn't help but smile a little and looked out of the window. They were on a long road that seemed to go on forever. It was a beautiful sunny day and not a cloud was in sight. She rolled her window down all the way, the wind caused her hair to fly all round her face. After a few more minutes, they stopped at a dirt road. "You didn't take me all the way out here to kill me did you?" Veda joked.

"We've been together for three years now, if I wanted to do that, I would've done it a long time ago." She mocked.

"Fair point. Are you gonna tell me where we are going now?"

"Nope. I do need you to wear this though." She said while holding up a blindfold.

"Your kidding right?"

"Not at all. It's only a few minutes away and I don't want you to have any spoilers."

Veda rolled her eyes, but put it on regardless. "Fine, but don't do anything crazy."

Iris was true to her word and the car came to a stop a few minutes later. She could here what sounded to be a waterfall. "We're here. Hold on and don't take that off yet." Veda heard before the door shut. She felt a warm hand on her arm as she was led out of the car and walked closer to the sound. "You can take it off now."

Veda did so and waited for her eyes to adjust. When they did, what she saw was even more beautiful than the pictures. "I can't believe you actually took me here." She said amazed. There was a hundred foot waterfall that ran into a clear bed of water. A slight rainbow was above the fall.

"I know you said you wanted to go here for awhile now, I figured it could be our last hoorah before I go to Missouri." Iris said, sounding a little saddened.

Veda turned to the blonde and their lips met. "I love you."

"I love you with all of my heart." Iris responded, smiling into the kiss. "Come on, lets jump in." Iris said before stripping down to her bra and underwear. Veda took in the scenery and realized how lucky she really was.

"Tryston is calming everyone down. They all want to go to war with the people responsible." Veda recognized that voice. Finn. She thought.

"If anyone can do it, it's him. How are you doing?" Jean asked.

"I can't stop thinking of seeing her in pain. I could've given her mercy, but I just drove off."

"She gave you an order Finn, you owed it too her to follow it."

"How's Veda?"

"She should be awake any moment now. You should go and talk to her."

"I wish I could. She'll never forgive me."

"They're at the camp!" A mans voice boomed.

"S**t. Zombies! Everyone get ready!" Finn ordered. "Jean, you stay here and keep Veda safe.

Veda could hear commotion outside of the tent, followed by Jean being tackled through the opening of the tent. It wasn't one of the dead, it was a man in heavy armor. He punched her square in the jaw, knocking her out. He got up and went to Addy's sleeping form. "I've got patient zero. Is number 95 ready?" The man spoke into the radio. "I'll bring another one, just in case." He looked around and saw Veda. "You'll have to do." He said as he signaled someone else to get Addy as the first guy grabbed Veda and dragged her out. She was too weak to fight back. All she could hear were screams from the fallen.
