A Chapter by Tina Kline

To keep their human family safe Shannon would circle the house in ever widening circles while Kevin kept watch from somewhere in the tree line perimeter. They kept an almost constant vigil. Sometimes they would unexpectedly fall into a death like state but usually they could feel the approach of this condition. There seemed to be no pattern to these spells nor did it happen to them at the same time. When they felt one of these spells coming on they'd hurry to their rooms and fall into this deathlike condition there in safety. They were very vulnerable when under the influence as they couldn't be woken so they wouldn't be able to defend themselves if attacked. So while one vampire might be out the other would still keep watch over their human family and their home. Shannon liked it better here than in the city and all its rubble where she had been living since her transformation.

Late in the evening one week after they had come to live at the farm Shannon was out hunting. The forest and field of altered grasses and wildflowers were full of transformed animals. The rabbits, foxes, coyotes, squirrels, raccoons, opossums, and deer were all altered by the radiation, chemicals and viruses floating about in the air. They all had metallic shiny eyes and a sheen over their whole bodies, the hair or fur on their bodies was spiky and looked hard even though it wasn't. The once sweet innocent looking animals now had fangs or very sharp teeth and claws or talons on the end of each toe. The deer had pointy hooves, perfect for kicking and tearing the flesh of attackers. They were all much stronger now but the vampires were even stronger, much more so.

Shannon was perfectly still as she focused on a rabbit nibbling on dark ugly green spikey leaf clover. The sharp teeth she could see as the rabbit bit off clover didn't bother her in the least nor did its very pointy and no doubt sharp talons. She liked the taste of rabbit blood and was eager to drink it now to soothe her hunger pangs. The rabbit dipped its head to bite off more clover and Shannon pounced.

She had the rabbit in her talons instantly. It struggled and thrashed about trying to escape, its desperate shriek loud. Shannon sat down in the clover patch and brought the struggling rabbit to her mouth and sank her fangs into its throat and feasted. She savored the taste of the blood and the relief it brought to her body. If she went too long without feasting on blood her body would start to hurt. The longer she went without feasting on blood the more severe the pain became. She knew Kevin experienced this too so concluded it was true for all blood suckers.

Kevin watched her a moment from the tree line then he focused on keeping them all safe. Nothing stirred but several deer and smaller animals. None of these were threatening. Altered birds fluttered about in the trees. They all had silver metallic eyes and metallic sheen to their sharp looking feathers. Their songs were now mostly clicks and slight moans, nothing pretty about them at all. There was no danger from them either. Kevin leaped up into a tree to get a better view. He watched Shannon toss away the dead rabbit, her meal finished.
