![]() ETERNALA Story by Tina Kline![]() A vampire tale.![]() I am trapped here for eternity, Shane reflected not for the first time. Trapped in a body that died and was reborn when I was 24 years old, 175 years ago. And Shane hated it now, hated being a vampire. At first it was cool, never aging, staying young while those around you aged, sickened and died. He didn’t do
either of those things and as the years went by; as the world changed he
realized he didn’t change with it. Shane’s world would always be the world of
1834 in the Vampires had no trouble going out in the daylight and it was on one cloudy day in 2009 when Shane noticed a human woman. It was the first time in his long vampire existence that he had ever noticed a human for any other reason than as a food source. She was an older woman, he guessed in her late forties. She was curvy with long curly dark brown hair and green eyes. She always looked sad, Shane noticed. After watching her for about a week he learned her name, Amanda Havel, and she had no lovers, no intimate relationships which he was glad about. She did have a couple lady friends she spent time with and she liked cats. He often watched her feeding stray cats behind her apartment building. Shane had become enthralled with her. The only time he wasn’t watching her or her apartment building where she lived or following her about the city was when he fed. And Shane fed on humans. He couldn’t be bothered with blood in plastic bags like so many vampires used in these times. To him that was dead blood. It had no flavor to it or nutritional value. It lacked the zest of life to it that Shane needed. Some vampires he knew could exist on it alone, vampires who felt guilty using humans for food, but not Shane. Nor was Shane a vampire who loved to kill his prey. He had killed humans but he didn’t make it a habit. He fed from willing humans or used mind compulsion to feed, replacing the memories of his victim from being fed upon by a vampire to something much more pleasurable, a safe memory and never killed them. Amanda lived on the fourth floor of a brick apartment building. She had a corner apartment which had two windows with small patios. They were just large enough for Shane to crouch upon and watch Amanda through the windows. I’m in love, Shane concluded. I’m in love with this lovely human woman. And he was surprised. Even after living as a vampire for 175 years he had never felt this way for a vampire or human before. It made Shane feel alive; he felt excitement for the first time in his memory. He wanted to approach Amanda, get to know her but he was afraid. He looked to be a 24 year old man even though he had actually been alive for 199 years, 24 years as a human man and 175 years as a vampire. Amanda was around 45 or 47 years old. Then he was a vampire. How would Amanda feel about that? Could she love him in his 24 year old looking male body as a vampire? Shane felt frustrated as his first week of watching Amanda became a second and then a third week. One cloudy afternoon Shane lingered near the door to Amanda’s apartment building. Today he decided he would approach Amanda. It was Friday and he knew Amanda didn’t have to go to work again until the following Monday. He’d have all weekend to convince her of his undying love. If he couldn’t convince her then he’d force her. Somehow Shane would have her. He could make her happy. He was young. Amanda should be happy to have a man so much younger than her as a lover. He spotted her approaching the apartment, key in hand. Now’s my chance, Shane thought as she moved closer to the locked door that led into the apartment building. He saw the exact moment when Amanda noticed him. He saw the concern that flooded her eyes. Shane smiled. He realized he was a stranger and a male and how suspicious it must look for him to be hovering near the door to her apartment building. “Hi.” Shane said, trying to appear friendly and unthreatening. “Hello.” replied Amanda. Shane shivered with pleasure at the sound of her voice. And she was speaking to him. Her voice sounded like music, heaven and life to him! Something that made him feel so excited to be alive. Something he hadn’t felt in so very long. He felt his love for her only increasing. He had to have her. He couldn’t exist any longer without her. She made him feel so alive! “I’m Shane.” He said but didn’t extend his hand. He had noticed that humans didn’t shake hands much anymore. She looked at him, her eyes narrowed with suspicion. She moved toward the door. Shane felt fearful that Amanda was about to reject him. The thought of her rejection brought a wave of panic that almost made him cry out. She can’t do this! I love her! She has to love me! She has no choice! He thought in his wild rise of panic. He watched Amanda insert her key into the door lock. She wasn’t going to even willingly tell him her name! Then Shane felt anger. She was not going to get away from him. He chose Amanda. She would be his lover and he would be hers. It didn’t matter to Shane if she wanted this or not. Amanda unlocked the door and positioned her body so she blocked his entry should he try to force his way in. She gave him one last look and gave a small gasp as her eyes locked with his. His eyes held her captive. She couldn’t move. One second. Two seconds. Then three. Then four. At five seconds he let her go. Now he saw Amanda was shaken and fearful. She rushed inside and let the heavy door fall closed with a loud bang. He watched her go then went around the building and easily leaped to one of the small patios outside her bedroom window on the fourth floor. It was starting to get dark but Shane wasn’t too concerned with any human seeing him seeming to fly up to the patio. He had only one thing on his mind and that was getting Amanda and making her his own. He loved her and refused now to exist without her. Shane easily broke the lock on the window, opened it and slipped inside into her bedroom. He was in her apartment before Amanda was and was waiting for her. Amanda unlocked the door to her apartment, entered and quickly relocked it behind her. Shane watched her from the shadows of the little hallway that led to her bedroom. He could tell she was still very shaken by their encounter just a few minutes ago outside her apartment building. She tossed her purse on the couch and her coat quickly followed. “Hello Amanda. It’s me, Shane.” He said as he stepped into the room. Amanda turned and screamed when she saw him. Then she cried, “What are you doing here? How did you even get in here?” “You would reject me Amanda Havel. I don’t like that. I love you. I want you. You are mine.” “Get out!” Shane grinned, exposing his sharp white upper and lower fangs and growled. “I’m not going anywhere.” He hissed. “I’m here for eternity.” And he lunged toward her. Amanda didn’t have a chance. “I love you Amanda.” Shane growled as he pulled her into his embrace, took hold of her hair, yanked her head to the side exposing her neck and sank his fangs into her throat. Amanda cried out, and then moaned as Shane siphoned her blood from her body. She struggled but didn’t have a chance of breaking free of his hold. Then, as she weakened from blood loss, her struggles became weaker also. I love you Amanda, Shane sent the thought to her as he drained her life essence. I’m doing this so that we can be together forever. You and me. Loving each other for eternity. I’ll never be alone again. And you will never be alone either. Amanda stopped struggling. Her body jerked a couple times, her heart sputtered then stopped. Shane withdrew his fangs and gently lowered Amanda’s dead body to the floor. “I love you Amanda to death. Be mine for eternity.” Shane stretched out her body, opened her mouth, bit his wrist and let his blood drip into her mouth. “Now we’ll be lovers forever. Now neither of us will ever again be sad and lonely.” Shane fed Amanda his blood. When he knew she had had enough he scooped her dead body up off the floor, carried it into her bedroom and laid it out on her bed. He lay beside her
and waited. Soon Amanda would waken as a vampire and he would be ready. I am trapped here for eternity in this 24
year old body but I’m not alone anymore. I have Amanda Havel who will now be
trapped here for eternity with me in her body. © 2010 Tina KlineFeatured Review
