Chapter 34

Chapter 34

A Chapter by Tina Kline
"

The start of a new beginning for Louise and Mr. Black.

"

Mr. Black, Mr. Stalker, Mr. Brown and several other Wolf People made the decision for the rest of the Pack.

There was no one in this Wolf People village that wanted this war. But there were few who would go against their Pack Leader even verbally, let alone physically.

When the next war strategy meeting arrived Mr. Black told me, “This is it. This will be the last meeting.”

He gave me a quick kiss. I knew what this meant. I saw it in his off white eyes. He didn’t want to do what he and the others were going to do, but they had to.

The disaster if they didn’t would be overwhelmingly too great.

I stood at the door as Mr. Black left. I watched from the kitchen window as he met up with the others.

They all looked grim. Killing a Pack Leader was not something any Wolf Person took lightly.

But sometimes it had to be done.

I waited. I don’t know what I was waiting for, some kind of communication, an excited announcement made by someone rushing through the village, loud shouts and outbursts as the dead Pack Leader was discovered?

Screams? Moaning? Howling? Lots and lots of weeping and crying?

I sat on the bed with Armand and the twins. The Wolf Babies slept snuggled up to each other, Armand played quietly with his small stones that looked a lot like colored glass.

I just waited, watching Armand, then watching the twins sleep, then looking toward the bedroom window.

It was a clear warm night, a crescent silver blue moon hung in the dark blue black night sky studded with myriads of silver stars.

Then I heard a loud cry. I was so startled even though I was waiting for something to happen that I jumped.

    Armand noticed this and laughed.

Then more cries and yells filled the dark.

I leaped off the bed. I knew this was it. It had to be.

I ran to the door and flung it open.

More shouts and cries filled the village. Excited voices exclaiming their shock and surprise.

I would have run out and joined the rapidly growing crowd of excited and alarmed Wolf People but I would not leave my Wolf Children.

But I heard what was being said, the Pack Leader was dead! He had been beheaded by a group of male Wolf People.

The war had been narrowly averted.

All the voices I could hear were actually relieved and happy. No one had wanted this war.

A celebration in the village was starting.

    Now I could hear chanting.

“The Pack Leader is dead! The Pack Leader is dead! Off with his head! The Pack Leader is dead!”

I had to smile at that almost childish chant. But they had to come up with something quick.

I was so relieved. I had been deeply afraid of the Pack Leader’s War and what it would do to my life, my Wolf Children’s lives and all the People of the Wolf Village.

I listened to the chanting and excited talking a while longer. Then I heard several Wolf People approaching the house. I had settled on the steps but quickly jumped to my feet.

“Louise!” Mr. Black called as he came around the corner of the house.

“Mr. Black! It’s true then? You and the others killed the Pack Leader?”

Mr. Black had blood splattered on his black clothes. So did Mr. Stalker who was with him. The crimson splashes did show up quite clearly on their black clothing.

“He is dead.” Mr. Black said. “I’d hug you my sweet but I have his blood on my clothes.”

“That’s okay!” I laughed with relief.

“But now we need a new Pack Leader.” Said Mr. Stalker.

“Oh. I hope he isn’t as dense and dumb as the one you just got rid of.” I said, still laughing brightly. The relief of the war not happening now was making me stupidly giddy.

“The village is deciding right now who will be the next Pack Leader even as they dispose of the former Pack Leader’s body and banish his mate to exile.”

“His mate is being exiled?” I smirked. She was a mean one. I was glad she was being exiled.

“She’s already left the village.” Mr. Black said.

“Good.” I said. “Now our lives will be peaceful.”

Suddenly I noticed the chanting had changed. New words were being repeated by the whole village.

    “What’s that? What’s happening?” I asked.

I noticed the chanting voices were coming this way. I looked at Mr. Black then Mr. Stalker, confused now.

When I saw the lopsided grin on Mr. Stalker’s face I felt a jolt of alarm.

Something was up and I didn’t know what it was and that worried me.

I looked at Mr. Black. He was smiling at me. “Things are about to change for us Louise.” He said to me.

“Change…for us?” I didn’t like that at all but he was smiling so it couldn’t be all that bad.

Wolf People were suddenly surging around both sides of the house and coming to a circle around where I, Mr. Black and Mr. Stalker were standing.

I felt a growl of alarm escape me.

“Mr. Black! Mr. Black! Mr. Black!” the crowd was chanting.

“They have decided.” Mr. Stalker said to me loud enough for me to hear over the chanting.

“Decided?” I felt dumb and very confused now.

“I have been chosen as the new Pack Leader.” Mr. Black said to me taking my hand.

Now I felt on the verge of fainting. “Why?” I squeaked.

A squeak which Mr. Black easily heard. “It’s simple. I challenged the Pack Leader and decapitated him in a fair fight. I was the victor. I take my rightful place now as the Pack Leader.” He looked down at me and smiled. “And you, my sweet plaything, are now the new Pack Leader’s mate!”

I was stunned. And the Wolf People kept chanting Mr. Black all around us.

When I had a moment later I’d reflect in awe and wonder at how far I’d come. From the very reluctant Wolf Person, to Mr. Black’s mate, to mother of 3 Wolf Children and then finally mate to the Leader of the Pack to this group of Wolf People who were also my Pack.

Ah! I loved this book! It is so different from anything we humans often write. It makes one question certain human characteristics that most believe to be not only natural rights but natural in itself. This book is amazing! Words do not even begin to describe the thoughts I am having, the ideas this simple story tells. Amazing!
