Chapter 26

A Chapter by Tina Kline
"

Louise and Mr. Black's story continues on......

"

We had just finished our first meal of the day when Mr. Black said to me, “I am going to announce to the Pack we have another member soon to join them on the way.” Here he paused, “Even though I’m sure most know.” He added with a smile.

I smiled back. “Miss Snow and Pine are chatty and I know we never asked them to keep silent.”

Mr. Black pushed the wooden bowl we had eaten our freshly killed raw bloody meat from aside and reached his hand across the space to take my hand.

Actually the meat hadn’t been freshly killed. It was the birthing season for elk and deer and no Wolf People hunted during that time. But it was raw meat from our stored supply and it was still tasty.

I remembered the taste of raw, freshly killed human flesh and licked my lips. I wanted to hunt a human again. I pushed that desire aside for now.

Mr. Black was holding my hand and watching me intently. I gave him my full attention.

“We will make this announcement together, my sweet.”

“I’m glad.” I said, a big grin spreading across my face. And I really was glad. I would have hated it terribly if I had been left out of this important moment a second time.

I felt like we were a truly mated pair now.

He loved me and I loved Mr. Black.

But there was still that problem. Miss Rose. She was still there, hovering on the sidelines, watching me.

“When will we make this announcement?” I asked.

    “Shortly.”

“I have something I need to tell you.”

“Oh?” He said, giving my hand an encouraging squeeze. “Do tell me.”

    “It’s about Miss Rose.”

Mr. Black made a soft growl. “Go on.”

I quickly told him how she had shown up here while he and most of the Pack were on the Big Hunt.

His growl grew louder. “Damn female.”

I smiled. “Are we going to deal with her like we talked about?” I asked hopefully.

Mr. Black laughed. “Pack justice. She’s encroaching on another Pack member’s mate.” Then he snorted with scorn. “Damn female.”

I stared at him. That was the second time he had used the word damn. “You got that word damn from the Human World! I never hear any other Wolf Person using it.”

His anger was gone suddenly and he grinned. “Yes I did. I have spent a lot of time there.”

    “Oh? Why?”

    “Getting to know one’s prey.”

“Oh!” I said, getting excited. “When are we going back to hunt again?”

He stood up from the table and came around it to me, pulling me up. “In time. First we get a sleepy Armand and we then go make our announcement of another Wolf Child on his or her way to join the Pack.”

I sighed. I wanted to hunt.

But making this announcement, with me this time, was important.

I held Armand while Mr. Black made the announcement to the Pack. We stood in the center of the village with the Pack gathered around us. There was much cheering and howling after Mr. Black spoke. Another Wolf Child on the way was something very special to the Wolf People since there were so few Wolf Children born to them. I was pleased to be part of it this time.

I noticed Miss Rose hovering at the edge of the gathered Pack Members, watching me. I tried my best not to look at her but I found it hard not to do so.

I held Armand close while different Pack Members came up to Mr. Black and me to congratulate us. I smiled and said thank you. Mr. Black did most of the talking and I was rather glad he did.

Miss Snow, Pine and Mr. Stalker came up to us to give us their congratulations. So did Mr. Brown and Maple. The Pack Leader and his mate came by at the last, telling Mr. Black what a good job he was doing producing Wolf Children so quickly and so close together for the Pack, which was unusual to, I had come to understand. They just nodded to me and moved on.

I felt a little snubbed and tried not to care.

When it was all done Mr. Black and I, still holding Armand close, headed back to our house.

“Good job, indeed!” I said to Mr. Black. “Everyone here always acts like they think you’re doing this all on your own! Creating these wonderful Wolf Children!”

“Don’t get upset Louise. Males here are always the head of the family, the head of the Pack. We are the leaders on every level. It is our way.”

I sighed, backing down. He was right and I knew it. There was no point being upset about it. It just seemed to be that way everywhere! Human World and Wolf People world.

I felt someone behind us and turned just enough to see. I didn’t see anyone but I knew someone was there.

“I felt it too.” Mr. Black said noticing I was checking behind me. He put his arm around my waist and pulled me close.

    “Miss Rose I bet.”

“Stalking you.” Mr. Black said with a soft snarl.

We reached our house and went in. It was just starting to get daylight. The trees were all in bud now and green shoots were rapidly becoming flowers with their own colorful buds just waiting to unfurl and open to the brief moments of daylight.

I put Armand in his baby bed. He looked up at me out of his silver blue eyes.

“Take a nap and you can play later.” I said to him.

He smiled at me but I could tell he’d rather play now instead of nap.

But he laid down and I covered him with a soft elk hide that was fashioned into a blanket and tucked a small pillow under his head, also made from elk hide and stuffed with feathers and down from water fowl.

Mr. Black came into the bedroom. “Miss Rose is lurking out there, watching the house.”

I looked at him. “I’m not surprised. That seems to be her favorite pass time lately.”

“She has become obsessed with you Louise and I’m going to do something about it now!”

I felt a surge of excitement. “You’re going to decapitate her?”

Mr. Black grinned, showing his sharp canines. “Something like that!”

“I want to be there! I want to see you do this!”

“No, no my sweet plaything. Stay here with Armand and keep our other little one safe too.”

I sighed. I was going to miss out on the fun!

Mr. Black went to the door, opened it and stood in the opening. I followed him to the door but didn’t go out.

He gave me a quick kiss then went out into the rapidly lightening and very sunny day.

I wonder what Mr. Black is going to do? I hope he puts an end to Miss Rose and her harassment of Louise.

It's nice that he included her in the accouncement of their child this time around. It seems that Louise is starting to really become part of this world. So curious as to what is going to take place with Mrs. Rose.
