Alaska's Great WoodsA Chapter by Tina KlineA complete ANN THE VAMPIRE short story. The snow was falling heavily, quickly accumulating. Standing at the floor to ceiling glass wall in her and Eddie's room Ann watched. Yes, it was a beautiful haunting sight. Somewhere out there was Justin, Tyler and Julie with the huskies. She could hear them barking from a great distance. Sara and tuna were downstairs playing cards or a board game, Ann wasn't sure. Eddie was out hunting. Ann sighed softly. Yes, winter's were long in Alaska and longer still in Coldfoot Alaska. But was she really sad? No. Ann loved her life as a vampire and wouldn't trade it for the world. Suddenly Ann spotted something moving in the distance. She was surprised she even spotted it with the heavy snow fall and her only casually looking out at winter. Something was moving in the dark somber Douglas Fir forest. “What is it?” Ann whispered. There were several and they had a luminosity about them. It made them look surreal and ghost like. Watching closely now Ann wondered if they were an ivory deer of some sort or a horse. She noticed they were coming her way. Should I get the others or just watch them myself. They are something special since I've never seen them before. It is not a moon creature like I once saw. Maybe similar but not the same. Maybe this vast Alaskan wilderness harbored all sort of strange creatures. They remain well hidden since we don't see them and we are always out in the forest. As well as Jake and his werewolves. I'll have to ask him sometime since he's never volunteered the information. Ann saw there were three of them and they were indeed deer like. Fragile and delicate like they could be easily broken, like some glass knick knock on someones shelf. “What are they?” she breathed. They were close to the house now, coming silently through the trees. All the huskies must be out since they weren't barking or maybe none left could sense these delicate elusive creatures. They had reached the edge of the trees below the glass wall of the house. Ann stared. They looked so fragile and delicate Ann wondered how they could manage moving through the forest with its heavy snow fall. But as they moved the snow seemed to move out of their way as if by some magical force or something. They don't even look real. They look like a cross between a horse and deer with their silver spun single horn growing from their forehead like a unicorn and their silky mane and tails and the tufts of hair around each leg above the delicate cloven hoof. So like the moon creature yet different. There is something different about these creatures. They look spun with moon silk with the delicate snow flakes thrown in. Such wonder! Such beauty. The three creatures stood about the height of a white tail deer. They stood there for a while, shaking their manes and twitching their long silky tails back and forth. It is as if they are looking for something, Ann thought. As Ann watched they started walking slowly along the forest tree line. Ann wished she could take a picture but she didn't dare move. They might notice and disappear. They wouldn't ever return if they were frightened way. The creatures continued, pawing at the snow and kicking at it as they moved along. Soon they were past the house and Ann continued watching them as long as she could. They turned back into the forest at one point and Ann could see their soft shimmering glow long after she couldn't see them anymore. Once they were gone Ann moved. She took a deep breath and thought about the creatures, wondering what they were and if they would return. Perhaps she'd go looking for them. There were unique creatures that lived in Alaska’s great woods and she wanted to seek them and find them.
