Chapter 18: Pure EvilA Chapter by Tina BeeSchool was busy with chitter chatter about tonights football game and when the teachers turned their ears off people were excitedly texting about the after party. All the football players would be there including my brothers Kevin and Mike.
So many girls were swooning over Kevin's pretty blue eyes and Mike's thick black hair that I spent most of the day fighting off questions about what Kevin and Mike were like at home. In my English class Misty English, a ninth grader known for running her mouth, began going on about Destiney and Jimmy.
"Looks like Destiney stole Myra's spot as Queen of the Freshmens," Misty announced loud enough for me to hear.
"Oh yes, the fall Queen Bee Myra, it's pathetic the way she's looking nowadays. All fat and puffy," Cindy Winston chimed in and they laughed.
This got the class buzzing, but I chose to ignore them because something else began troubling me. If I was getting all fat now then that meant my pregnancy was getting harder and harder to conceal. I thought back in my head to my doctor's appoint two weeks ago. I was just at twelve weeks and now I was at fourteen. In the coming months I would grow bigger and by December, I projected, I'd have to leave Graham High.
I knew now that before I exited I had to leave my mark.
This morning I had called Linda and explained the plan to her. She let me know that she had the camcorder to record the event and that she'd give it to Langston at a designated rendezvous spot right before the party. Laura would be with her since Linda had already explained everything to her.
When my last class of the day ended I did my usual routine of walking to the front of the school. However today was not like yesterday because Celia followed me with her usual irritating enthusiasm.
"So are you going to the football game?" Celia asked me.
"Yes," I answered her in an annoyed tone.
"I am too. A big group of us girls are going. You should join us. I want to show off my new sister to them," Celia giggled and I rolled my eyes.
"I'm riding with my friends there. We're going to watch Jimmy's first game," I told her and this caused her to sulk.
"Oh," Celia said, "well then I hope you have fun with your friends."
"Aren't you going to Phoebe's party?" I asked her because I felt bad for hurting her feelings.
"What party?" Celia asked and I knew I'd said too much.
"Never mind," I answered her quickly.
Celia's eye widened with understanding. She pulled out her cell phone and began texting. Mom was nowhere in sight and I was growing anxious. I needed to get home so I could get ready to leave. Cameron was coming by with the rest of The Crew to pick me up at six PM.
"Wendy says the party is at Phoebe's and anyone can go," Celia told me after a few seconds.
"Good for Wendy," I answered her.
"You know you don't have to be so rude. I'm being nice to you and all I get back is negativity. What did I ever do to you?" Celia whined and I knew if I didn't answer her right her and right now she'd never get it.
"Because I don't like you. I don't like your dad. I don't like your dad dating my mom. I loathe to think about your dad and my mom getting married and you know what no one gives a damn what I think so I don't give a damn about you or your gold digging father," I said in the coldest voice I could muster.
"You're evil! Pure evil!" Celia said backing away from me.
Her limp hair went into her face as she collided softly with the gold pole behind her.
Mom pulled up and Arthur was in the car. He smiled and waved at me. To show off my evilness I smiled and waved back at him. Celia looked terrified, but I skipped happily toward the vehicle and got into the backseat.
"What's wrong with Celia?" Mom asked me.
"I have no idea," I replied as I buckled in.
"Sweety get into the car. We need to hurry for a business meeting," Arthur called out and this was news to me.
Celia walked quickly to the car and got in. All without saying a word to me.
Mom pulled away from the curb and we were homeward bound.
I showered, dressed, did my hair, and put on make-up all under three hours. Violetta called and asked if I was still going to the game and I told her yes. She said that she was already at practice and from there they would proceed to the football field. We said our goodbyes and then I texted Amber asking if she was coming. Right away she replied with yes and then she confirmed that Cameron would be here to pick me up in about fifteen minutes.
When I got downstairs Celia sat by herself watching television.
"The game starts in an hour at Starks High, aren't you going?" I asked her.
"I changed my mind," she told me solemnly.
"Wise choice," I said to her.
Just then I heard the beep of Cameron's horn. I went into the kitchen and grabbed an apple. Back in the living room Celia kept her eyes on the TV.
Out the door I went and onto the walkway. Inside the car were the people I'd come to trust the most.
I sat in the way back and looked out the window. The seat next to me was empty and I knew why. That spot was saved for my friend who slept now in eternity, but she still sought justice for her unsolved murder.
The game went phenomenal. Jimmy was floating on the field. Kevin had a few fumbles, but Mike scored three touchdowns. At the end of the game our team one and the celebratory mood was heightened. Crystal and I sat together shivering. Her pregnancy was now a little more obvious and she let me know she could now feel the baby.
"They say it's too early, but I don't believe them. She's kicking up a storm as we speak," Crystal said and I smiled.
My little one remained hidden deep inside me. I closed my eyes and imagined what he would look like. I hoped he resembled Greg when he got older just to prove to the father that never was.
I saw Rick for the first time since the whole video debacle went down. He had his helmet on so I didn't know who he was looking up here in the bleachers. To my far right sat the two b*****s who had ruined my life. When we first entered the stadium Principal Gellar pulled me to the side and told me not to have any contact with them. That meant The Crew and I had to sit at the way top in the nosebleeds while the Kimmi, Daisy, and their posse gathered at the bottom milling around having fun.
Violetta had moves on the track that was situated right before the football field. Of all the cheerleaders she was the best and I made a mental note to tell her that after the game.
Amber seemed very interested in the male cheerleader, Andrew, I'd met on my first day. He did have a tight body and sometimes when he lifted up his shirt you could see his six pack.
"I can introduce you to him," I told Amber.
"Would you?" Amber asked me excitedly.
"Sure, I love playing matchmaker," I answered her and she grinned and shook her head.
Destiney sat faithfully in the stands too. She was gathered with her clique watching Jimmy. Every time he did anything Destiney would stand up and holler. Deep inside me pooled a hint of jealously. I wondered when I would have a guy to hoot and clap for. © 2009 Tina Bee |
