Ch. 25: The InterviewA Chapter by Tina BeeMyra finds out that doing whatever you want can have dire consequences.I spent a total of three days in that hotel room. Every night there was a different story about me, Langston, Kimmi, and Daisy in the news.
Kimmi was released late Saturday and Daisy followed Sunday morning. Monday night there was a large expose on the rise and fall of the great high school football star Langston Miles with a promising future who was now charged with sexually assaulting a minor and recording and distributing child pornography. They wouldn't say who that minor was for legal purposes, but pretty much everyone who had been following the story knew that said minor was me.
Our house was on the news many times during the following week and when I went home Tuesday morning it wasn't without a big fiasco. Cameras and microphones were shoved in my face and there were even protesters out despite the early hour.
The mood in the once upbeat house had changed to a depressing melancholy. No laughter filled this house and we all went through the motions. Mike left in the afternoon for football conditioning with Kevin and Sonny stayed in his room. Mom had taken away the laptop saying that the attorney wanted to view my Facebook page as a defense against my assault and battery charge. No attempted murder charges had been filed yet so that was a relief.
On Thursday morning a social worker came to the house. She wanted to talk to me privately in my room. The visit was totally unexpected and she assured mom she wasn't there to take us away.
"With these type of charges the judge presiding over the preliminary hearing thinks it is best to get a psychological profile on the defendant to make sure she's mentally fit" the social worker explained.
"Her name is Myra" Mom said.
"I know. Myra Huntington" the social worker said with a smile.
"Do you mind, Myra?" Mom asked.
"No" I said.
"We should conduct this interview in a quiet place with little distractions" the social worker said.
"My bedroom is the best place. It's upstairs. I'll lead the way" I said and off we went.
Inside my room the social worker set up shop on my desk. She put out a tape recorder and dug in her briefcase for my file.
"Is it ok if I sit in the chair?" she asked.
"It's fine" I said and she took a seat.
"Sit wherever is most comfortable for you and just for legal purposes I have to record this conversation because the judge has to hear it" she explained.
"Ok" I said taking a seat at my window ledge that overlooked Mrs. Greene's place.
The social worker read out the date and time and then she had me read back my name and it began. "We're going to talk about what happened on the evening of Thursday June nineteenth. How did the day start?" She asked.
I explained how I woke up and brushed my teeth.
"Tell me what happened between the hours of twelve p.m. and seven p.m." she said and I did so.
"...then Greg came over and we were in my room looking at my Facebook page" I said.
"And Facebook is what?" she asked.
"A website that everyones on" I said.
"And who is everyone?" she asked.
"Everyone at school. All my friends and family" I explained.
"What was on your Facebook page that evening?" she asked.
"Well typical stuff, but there was a message from Kimmi" I said.
"What was it?" she asked.
"A link to a video" I said.
"What was the video of?" she asked.
"It was, um, a video of me and Rick Santos" I said.
"And who is Rick Santos?" she asked.
"A friend of my brother's who I went out on a date with" I said.
"What was happening on the video?" she asked.
"We were making out" I said.
"Anything else?" she probed.
"Maybe touching under my dress" I said.
"Maybe? You can't remember?" she asked.
"Ok he touched under my dress" I admitted.
"And who recorded this video?" she asked.
"Well I didn't know until I was at the police station, but it was Langston Miles" I said.
"Langston Miles is?" she asked.
"Another friend of my brother Kevin" I said.
"Was there a reason as to why Mr. Hughes was recording this? Did he have permission?" she asked.
"Not from me" I said.
"Did Mr. Santos say it was ok?" she asked.
"I guess so I'm not sure" I said.
"To your knowledge were Rick Santos and Langston Miles good friends?" she asked.
"I suppose. I mean they were on the football team together I explained.
"So it's safe to say they might have shared a lot of information with each other" she said.
"Yea I guess" I told her.
"To your knowledge had Mr. Hughes ever been sexually aggressive to any females?" she asked.
"No. We don't go to the same school so I wouldn't know" I said.
"Was he here often?" she asked.
"Almost everyday" I said.
"And Rick?" she asked.
"Every few days out of the week" I said.
"Ok now were you sexually active at any time with any of them in the last three months?" she asked.
"Yes" I muttered.
"Who?" she asked.
"With Langston" I said.
"When did that happen?" she asked.
"The day I got out of school for summer break" I said.
"Are you sure?" she asked.
"Yes. Positive" I answered.
"Have you been sexually active with any other men in the last three months?" she asked.
"No" I lied.
"Back to the Facebook video. Now Kimmi sent a link to you, correct?" she asked.
"Yes" I said.
"To your knowledge did Daisy Spins know that the video had been sent?" she asked.
"Well on Kimmi's Facebook page Daisy had left mean comments geared toward me after the video was floating around so I'd say yes" I answered.
The social worker was writing vigorously throughout this interview.
"Now tell me what happened between the hours of six p.m. to midnight on Thursday evening" she asked and again I rehashed the events at the burger stand" she said.
"...then Greg drove away and we got onto the freeway. We headed out of town because he knew the cops would be looking for me" I said.
"So he was trying to harbor a fugitive?" she asked.
"No. He was worried that his parents would be mad at him about the car and he didn't want to face them" I explained.
The social worker snapped the tape off abruptly and turned to me.
"This interview has to be completed tomorrow. We've run out of time" she said.
"Oh ok" I said.
"I'll just go down and talk to your mother and set up a time. Please take care of yourself" she said and I nodded ok.
With that she was gone and I was alone. I went to my phone and saw that David had sent me a text message.
"Just wanted to say that I miss you and I hope everything's alright" David wrote.
"Everything's fine and I hope your mom and siblings are doing well" I wrote back.
"They are. How have you been?" David wrote back.
"A little weird. A social worker just left after interviewing me" I said.
"Oh" he sent.
"She'll be back tomorrow" I said.
"Damn. I was hoping to come see you" he sent.
"You can. She was only here for like an hour and I doubt she'll come when it's really late" I said.
"Good. Well I have to get back to work" he said.
I sent him a good bye text and then I went downstairs. Mom was sitting on the couch with Buster in her lap.
"When will the worker be back?" I asked.
"In the afternoon. You want to sit down?" Mom asked.
I nodded yes and took a seat.
"It's been a rough week mom and I'm sorry for all of this" I said.
"It's my fault. I could've been a better parent. I could've been paying attention to you when you most needed me" she said.
I could not argue with her there.
"I didn't have to beg you to go on a date with Rick. I could've listened" I said.
"I saw the risk and I ignored it. I wanted to be your friend more than your mother" mom said.
This didn't sound like mom at all. Something was definitely wrong. © 2009 Tina BeeAuthor's Note
