Ch. 1: What They Don't KnowA Chapter by Tina BeeMyra Huntington is a fourteen year old girl who always seems to find trouble. Her father is long gone from the picture and Myra couldn't happier about that or so she thinks. Myra lives in an upscale neighborhood with her mother and three brothers.People never cease to amaze me. One minute they said one thing and then the next minute they were doing the total opposite. I'm so tired of it.
This fall I'm going to be a freshman in high school and I know it's time that I grew up. My brothers don't understand me and my mom's never around enough for me to get advice from or to have that oh so good one on one girl time with.
My brothers are all older than me. Kevin, Mike, and Sonny. We're all a year apart and we had different dads. Sonny was a year older than me and his dad was some Mexican guy my white mother met at a bus stop. Mike's dad was from Samoa, and Kevin's dad was some white guy mom went to high school with. My dad was black. That was painfully obvious. My skin was so dark and my hair was so long and kinky people were often stunned that I would hop in the car with a bunch of white looking people.
I'm fourteen, Sonny's fifteen, Mike's sixteen, and Kevin just turned seventeen.
Mike is always able to tan naturally and his skin always turned a crispy light brown in the summer. We look like our mom so we favor the most. Sonny look like a cholo and hung around all the Hispanics at our school. Kevin hung around a group of jocks that were so obnoxious I couldn't stand being at home when they came after football practice to eat all our food and blow the toilet up.
One of his football friends who was a senior has a major sick crush on me. His name's Rick Santos and he's a Filipino guy who's over ft 3 inches tall with a thick neck and blue eyes I usually got lost inside of. He wears his hair long and drives this nice Plymouth Barracuda that he had painted lime green and put 20 inch spinning rims on.
It was the last day of 8th grade Rick was coming to pick me up from school. No one knows except for some of my school friends. As he drove up Daisy Spins whistled.
"Looks like your chariot awaits Myra" Daisy said.
"Yea well see you this weekend. My mom said you can spend the night" I said and practically skipped to Rick's car.
The moment I closed the door he sped off. As I looked back I saw Daisy with two other girls whispering. I didn't have much time to think about it because Rick made a sharp turn around the corner and headed for the freeway.
I was scared, but played it cool.
"You got a cigarette?" I asked.
Rick hit his hand on the glove box and a pack of Marlboro's was in plain sight with a lighter next to it. I plucked one up and lit it. I took a long draw and relaxed. I could've used something stronger, but this would do.
Rick drove for thirty minutes in silence. We pulled up to a burger joint on the outskirts of town. He hopped out and went to order us some food. I couldn't even imagine eating a thing. That's how nervous I was.
When the food got there I began making feeble attempts at conversation.
"I'm so glad school is out for summer. I was getting tired of all those teachers yapping on and on about things I don't care about" I said.
Rick was silently eating which made me feel worse.
"Next year I'll be going to high school. I can't wait" I said.
Still nothing. I began playing with my hair. Usually I kept it in a ponytail or I let my friend Keisha braid it for $20 dollars. I had let it all down before Rick came to pick me up and now I was hotter than ever.
"Do you have a hair holder in here?" I asked stupid.
"I like your hair the way it is" Rick said.
"Thank you" I said smiling.
I was going on 5'7". Mom says I'm going to be tall and I should consider modeling like she had when she was my age. She even got into some mainstream magazines by the time she was a sophomore in high school. All the girls were jealous of her because she was really popular. That's why she decided to leave that small town and head for the city. That and the fact that she got pregnant at the end of her junior year.
"You're not like other girls you know that Myra?" Rick asked.
"Yea I know" I said.
"At first you started out as this little annoying girl who used to pester the guys and I at your house, but this year you changed" Rick said.
Boy had I changed! Puberty had hit me like a ton of bricks. My chest was already heaving out and I had a figure to die for. Well maybe not to die for, but I was far from unattractive. I was curvy and Rick wasn't the only guy to show me some attention.
"Changed in a good way right?" I asked.
"Hell yea" Rick said and he was staring at me really funny.
"What?" I asked laughing.
"Do you want to go to the drive in with me this weekend?" Rick asked.
"Only if Daisy can come" I said.
"Who? Oh Spins little sister? Ugh no she's mean" Rick said.
Kyle Spins was Daisy's big brother. He was the same age as Mike and he played baseball with him.
"Well who would go?" I asked.
"Just you and me" Rick said.
Suddenly that bad feeling came back again. I know what Rick wants. I wasn't stupid. At school they made us watch boring as heck documentaries on sex and STDs. Nothing was more gross than hearing about a period I've already got and some boy trying to get between my legs.
"That sounds fine to me" I said even though deep down I was quivering.
"Yea and no Daisy. Oh and don't bother telling Kevin he'll just get mad" Rick said.
"I won't, but I hope you know I'm trouble" I said and took a bite out of my burger it tasted like grease.
Now thinking back on it I could've said no. I could've told Rick that I only allow my boyfriends to take me to drive ins, but I was too chicken. © 2009 Tina BeeAuthor's Note
