Daniel and Smokey travel through the desert and up the road to the city Tamril. An Excerpt from my book.

The desert was sweltering and endless. The four day journey back, however, was much easier and quicker than the journey inward. Although the loss of Kaleb and the growing fear in Daniel’s heart mad the journey tough. He found his mind slipping in and out of his body as the high noon sun beats its rays of fire down upon him. Even Smokey seemed to be lost in though as Daniel often had to stop him from wondering off in the wrong direction.

They reached the road at dusk, the sun colored the sky a purple and pink hue as it dipped beneath the mountain tops. They took the road heading east towards the city of Tamril; their Daniel hoped to find rest, food and perhaps someone willing enough to join him on his quest.

As the sun winked is last goodbye over the horizon, a thousand sparkling diamonds switched on in the night sky, one by one, flashing beacons guiding them on their long journey. Daniel stopped on the side of the road and kneeled down on one knee. There amongst the giant elms and blowing in the wind, and the sound of the crickets whistling their songs in the still night air, he prayed. He prayed to Selunia, Goddess of the Moon and keeper of lost souls, he prayed to his father, he prayed to his mother, and when he had no one left to pray to, he slept, with Smokey resting that furry club of a chin on his stomach.

Morning brought with it a calming breeze. The sun had washed away the night and was now hanging between a set of puffy dark clouds that only promised rain. They had barely made it past Salt Bend when the two clouds smashed into each other like a train wreck, slowed down to the minutest fraction of a second, and burst open drenching the parched land.

Salt Bend was nothing more than a dry stretch of blinding, white hills that rolled their way across the country side. And as the rain began to pour, pool, and mix with the sand it sent a smell of rotting eggs to fill the air.

It was nearly past mid-day when they came upon another sign pointing in the direction towards Talmir. Based upon what sign had said they were still at least two days out. Daniel once again found himself day dreaming about his past and all the choices that had led up to where he was now. He found himself wondering if Kaleb wasn’t just another crazy old man, who brings a rambling stranger in their home, Daniel though to himself. But the story of the City of Water was so vivid in his mind, ever since he was a child he imagined himself going there and seeing the same wonders his father had. Perhaps he was the on, he didn’t feel special, instead, he felt like the most average person in the world…No, that wasn’t true, he felt below average. Average people might be missed when they were gone, Important people were sure to be missed, but not him, he knew he wouldn’t missed, any one who would have missed him had gone from this place long ago.
