The Girl and the Shadow

The Girl and the Shadow

A Story by Tiltran
"

This is a test run of a story I came up with. A girl wakes to find her self in a plain of nothing and meets an interesting creature who says it's the shadow or spirit of a man.

"
In a plain of nothing there was girl, she awoke there not knowing who she was or how she got there but she knew she was there, that is wasn't  a dream. She sat there and wondered what exactly she was sitting on because when she moved her hand across the surface of which she was sitting on it rippled like water yet is wasn't wet.  All around her it was like this, up, down, left, right, where ever she looked it was like this.  She sat that there in a daze, mystified by the place in which she sat wondering how far she could walk to the left or to the right, whether she could jump and never fall or jump and go into a continuous drop. "Hullooooooo..." she heard someone speak but she heard it from everywhere yet no where at the same time.
"What was that?" she said quietly to herself but it wasn't quiet it went through the whole plain she was in searching of something to absorb it or something to bounce off, but it found nothing.
As she scanned the area for the thing that was not nothing but something that made the noise she felt a tap on her shoulder, she jumped at the sudden feeling, "It was me..." she turned to see a being coming out of the nothing, it looked like a man but it had long ears like a fennec fox or a long-eared jerboa, and its face had human qualities but also the qualities of a wild feline and right below the each eye was a grey scar that narrowed the farther it was below the eyes.  As it came further into the plain of nothing she saw its hands were that of a mans up to the fingers that had claws of black but then she realized its entire body was covered in black fur, though as she looked closer it wasn't black fur it moved like fog.  Once it was completely in the plain of nothing she saw that it had a tail and its feet were not feet but paws with the same black claws at the end of them like the hands. It looked at her with a puzzled look, "Do I have something on my face?..." it said while feeling its face to make sure there was nothing.
But the girl still sat in silence staring at the creature that had walked through nothing into the nothing in which she was in, "Wh... what a-are you?" she managed to get out barely audible but like before it was not  quiet,
"I am a shadow... or a spirit... of a man who is not here but somewhere else..." it said while walking around the plain of nothing they were in. "And may I ask who you are?..." It stopped and looked at her as if it could find the answer to its' question by staring at her.
"I-I am... I am..." she realized once again that she didn't know who she was, she began to panic, "I don't know!" she yelled and started to cry.
The creature put its' hand on the girl's shoulder, "Now listen to me as I say, a persons memories are the perso-"
"So I'm no one?!?" she interrupted with a cry.
"Yes you are a person you see you have memories, you remember waking up here, your remember seeing me enter, and you remember talking to me..."
"But I don't know my own name!"
"then I will call you girl...?" she stared at it with dead eyes, "Okay then... uh..." it notice she had a choker necklace on with a cameo on the front.  It pointed at it a it went closer to inspect what was on it.
"What is it?" she said trying to look.
"Its a picture of you... with wings... Like an angel flying upward..."
She looked up at The creature, "How is this suppose to help me find out what my name is or who I am?"
It laughed and said, "Well we could call you Irony..."
She glared at it, "Why would we do that."
"Cause..." It began, "The cameo shows you with wings which usually symbolizes freedom yet you are trapped in the place of nothingness..." It laughed again.
The girl stood up with anger boiling over, "Yeah, well how did you get so clever if you are just of a shadow of a man!" It looked at her then sat down and started to think.
"Well..." it invited her to sit down, "You see I am more of a spirit then a shadow really... And I have been with him since he was brought into existence, and I have learned the ways and knowledge of the world along side him...  Though I could never pick up a sword or taste and apple but I watched as he did and I learned from that..."
She looked at the creature, spirit she corrected herself mentally, "So if you with him since he was born doesn't he know you are there and wouldn't he have given you a name?"
The spirit laughed," Yeah he knew I was there we talked a lot actually I was kind of his adviser and yes he did call me something..." The spirit hesitated, "Well before I tell you the name he gave me I have to tell you his story."
"Why is that?" she asked.
"Because the name means nothing without the story behind it. And its one heck of a story..." The spirit stretched and laid out on the plain,"Shall I begin?" It asked looking for her approval, she nodded and laid down next to it, "Alright then let's start from the beginning..."
