The Call

The Call

A Story by Tori
"

It's about a girl and her best friend. Her frind gets a call from someone she doesn't know and then she starts seeing things.

"

I was very worried about my friend. She was acting very strange these days. Hi, my name is Jackie, and I live in Forks, Washington. I’m almost 18 years old, and I share an apartment with my best friend, Emily. She’s the one I’m very worried about. I’m scared that she might be doing something very horrible.
“Emily, are you okay?” I asked I’ve never seen her so upset in my whole life. This wasn’t a very good thing, either.
“Umm yeah, I’m fine. I just saw something…strange,” She had the strangest look on her face, and I knew something wasn’t right here. Although, she has been acting as if she’s guilty…I need to find out what’s going on.
“Emily, you’re scaring me! Please tell me what’s going on,” She pointed to something in the forest, and she started going toward it and all of a sudden she started to point.
“I see something in there, I’m going to go see what is,” Emily said with a very straight face. This really wasn’t good. I didn’t know what to do, and whatever was going on…it was too late to stop it now.
“Emily, you have to stop this right now!” I grabbed her hand and pulled her back as hard as I could. I think she snapped out of it.
“Oh, my, god! Jackie! You’ll never believe what I saw!” I knew it…she was back to normal now.
“God, you scared the crap out of me. Don’t ever do that again.” I demanded her. We started to walk back to our house, I stayed as close to her as possible…just incase. Whatever was happening to her has never happened before. What of there was a man trying to…rape her or something? Was it a ghost? Whatever it was…I’m glad it’s done and over with.
I couldn’t sleep that night-I was way to worried. I slept in a sleeping back right next to Emily’s feet. I felt her get up…I “pretended” to be asleep. As soon as she left the room, I followed her quietly.
“Hey, Emily, what are you doing?” I asked acting all sassy.
“Oh…umm…I was…get-ting a drink,” She said. I knew she was lying. Whenever she does, she always stutters. I had a half of a mind to calling someone about this…but who?

The next morning seemed to be a bit less stressful then I thought it would be…but it’s only 8:00am.
“Good morning, Jackie,” Emily said as she was entering the kitchen as I was eating a bowl of cereal.
“Morning,” I said to her with a mouth full of my breakfast. I heard her try saying something to me…but I wouldn’t let her.
“Umm…today I was going to go-“ I cut her off. I didn’t know what she had in mind.
“Did you know that pigs are really fat animals?” I said to her. I started laughing at myself.
“Listen to me, Jackie. I’m going to the park with…umm…Ben,” she continued, “I hope you don’t mind. You don’t need to come with, I think I can manage,” Emily said to me. Something was very wrong with this picture. I looked at her as if there was something nasty on her face.
“I don’t think so!” I snapped at Emily. She jumped back; it looked like she was…afraid of me.
“God, Jackie, don’t you trust me? I’m your best friend,” She saw the worried look I had on my face.
“It’s too risky. I’m not letting you go there alone. I’ll go with you, but I’ll leave you alone. I don’t want anything weird happening to you at that park again,” I was talking way too fast.
“Whatever, Jackie,” Emily was starting to make me really mad. She left out the door.

The park was right across the street from our window. I was watching her…and I knew she knew it. I see her pointing and walking toward the forest again. I saw Ben running to her, but she wouldn’t listen to him. She only stops when I’m with her. I ran as fast as I could before it was too late.
“What the heck happened?” I yelled at Ben, and he knew I was really scared. I saw a look on his face that was like I knew this was a bad idea. “Ben, what happened to Emily?” I started yelling louder. He just stood there staring at me.
“I don’t know,” he continued “we were holding hands and all of a sudden she takes her hand away, and she started pointing toward the forest and walked to it,” I was so close to slapping him in the face!
“Dude! Did you even think about stopping her? What if something bad happened? Then how would you feel?” I was yelling at the top of my lungs. Everyone was starting at me, but I didn’t care.
“I’m so sorry, Jackie.” He said with a sorry face on. “I didn’t know stuff like this happened a lot, I though she was kidding or something,” he finished.
“So, let me get this strait…you’ve been going out with her fir what? 10 months, and you haven’t seen this?” I continued, “This is the 2nd time this week it’s been happening to her. If you really love her, then you’ll keep her away from that park. That’s where it all started!” I was done yelling; I didn’t care if he was scared…I needed to show him how I felt.
“I’m sorry, Jackie, but you don’t need to be so mean about this, after all its just Emily,” He said to me as if he had this really weird crush on me.
“How can you say that? She’s your girlfriend! You’re being so careless!” I started to yell again.
“Clam down, okay? We’ll stop her right now,” I saw the look on his face; I think he was joking about it.
“No, you stay here. I’ll go get her. I’m the only one she’ll ever listen to, Ben. So back off.” I said. I saw the disappointment in his eyes; it made me feel a little bad. These past couple of years, I’ve always known that the only reason why he went out with Emily was because he was trying to make me jealous. I see now, what I saw then. I was staring blankly into the dark trees that lied ahead of us. I felt something going around my waist, and I felt me getting closer and closer to Ben.
As he kept making me get closer, I saw that he was leaning into me. He kissed me. It was unbelievable. What was Emily going to think about this?
“Umm…I’m sorry, Jackie. I couldn’t help myself,” He started, but I wouldn’t let him finish.
“That’s it!” I yelled
“What’s it?” He said wide-eyed. I had a brilliant idea! It was SO going to work! I can’t believe I didn’t think of this before!
“If you kiss me in front of Emily, she might snap out of this,” I said.
“Umm…yeah. But won’t she get really mad at you?” He looked at me as if I were some kind of stranger.
“Yes, I know she will. But it’s the only way to cure her,” I said. I pulled him into the forest, and we saw Emily like a mile away. Ben and I quickly ran and eventually caught up to her.
“Okay, ready?” I asked Ben.
“Yes.” He said. I leaned into him and kissed him as if I actually loved him. I think it worked. I saw her staring at me.
“Jackie! How could you?” She yelled at me, it wasn’t pleasant, but it was totally worth it.
“I did it for a good reason,” I continued after a short pause. “You were in that ‘mood’ again. I only kissed Ben because I knew it would make you snap out of it.” I said to her talking very fast.
“Oh…I’m so sorry, Jackie,” She looked at me as if I was her best friend again. All though, Ben wouldn’t stop staring at me…it was weird. Emily seemed to notice. “You guys don’t really…like each other…do you?” She asked.
“Umm…no. I’ve got a boyfriend, remember, Emily?” I looked at her trying to see if it would work.
“Oh, you never told me,” she continued, “Lets get out of here.” Ben and I both nodded at each other. I led the way out, I saw in the corner of my eye that Ben and Emily were holding hands. Ben was still staring at me.
“This is getting really weird, Ben.” I began, “Why do you stare at me too much?” He didn’t say anything. There was a quiet silence in the air. Even Emily was quiet. What was going on? “Umm…hello?” I asked getting very impatient.
“Sorry, Jackie,” Ben said. “I got lost in my own little world.” We were almost out of the forest; I was relieved that nothing was currently happening again.
“It’s fine. But from now on, lets stay OUT of the forest; it’s very dangerous. I walked very fast so that Emily and Ben could have a “moment” together. I was laughing to myself, and Ben and Emily were giving me a look that looked like they were saying what are you doing?
“I’m glad to be home,” Emily finally said, “Ben, do you want to stay the night?” She looked at me looking for approval.
“Umm…sure. Where would I sleep, though?” He asked still staring at me.
“With me,” Emily said. Ben gave her a weird look. I knew he didn’t want to. He though things might get out of control.
“Emily, I’m sire Ben wants to stay at his house, tonight.” I said looking at Ben. He nodded at me.
“Thanks, Jackie,” he continued “Look, Emily, I like you and all, but I think there’s someone else right now. I think we’d be better off as just friends,” he waited a short moment and stared at Emily waiting for her reaction.
“Umm…but-“ she was trying to say something, but I cut her off.
“Emily, just to let you know, it’s not me. It’s that Rachael girl who used to go to school with us a few years ago.” I was waiting for her to speak.
“I don’t understand,” She began.
“Emily, don’t take this the wrong way. But when you act weird like you just did, I can’t handle that in my life right now. I love you, but I can’t do it anymore. I’m sorry,” Ben was telling the truth. I was through with this behavior, too. I’m just like him, I can’t handle it, and Emily ran off.

A few days past, nothing new really changed. Emily was still mad at me, and Ben. I didn’t know what to do.
“Hey, Jackie. If you had a choice, would you come and live with me?” Ben asked me eager to know what I was going to say.
“I can’t just leave Emily. What if something weird happens again?” I knew what he was going to say next.
“You and I both know that we can’t deal with it anymore…what do you say?” He looked at me holding me by the waist. What do I do now…I couldn’t just leave her behind; she’s my best friend.
“As much fun as that sounds, I don’t think we should,” I said pulling away from Ben. He had a very confused look on his face.
“Well, then I’m leaving,” He said. I saw him headed for the front door. I didn’t want him to leave, I liked him-No-I loved him. He was my best friend, and so was Emily. Ben was right, though. I couldn’t take this anymore.
“Wait! Please don’t go. What if we put her into therapy? I don’t want to loose you. You’re my best friend, Ben!” I was starting to cry a bit. I didn’t want it to end this way.
“Like that’s going to help. Like you said, she just started this like three hours ago,” Ben said. He was right. It wouldn’t be right just to leave her. I had an Idea!
“Ok, I have an idea, what if we make her live with her Mom?” I said with a grin on my face.
“That could work, too. But what of her mom doesn’t look after her? Something bad could happen,” Ben said.
I sighed “Then what are we going to do? There’s no other place she can go,” I saw the look on Ben’s face…I was worried. What if I pissed him off? I thought in my head.
“You have a good point, but it’s worth a try, right?” He said grabbing me by my waist. Emily walked into the room. She saw what we were doing.
“Emily? Did you just wake up?” I asked her hoping she didn’t hear anything Ben and I were saying.
“Umm…yeah? What’s going on?” She asked me. Damn it! I said in my mind. I knew she must have heard.
“Emily? Can we talk to you?” Ben said taking his arm off me and headed toward her. What the heck was he doing?
“Why? So you can tell me that you’re in love with my best friend?” She said walking away.
“Emily! Stop it!” I continued, “Ben and I are JUST FRIENDS!” I Yelled at her. She knew once I starting yelling that I was serious.
“Okay, I’m sorry. What do you need to tell me, Ben?” She said looking over at Ben and totally ignoring me. This wasn’t what I expected.
“Jackie and I think it would be best if you went and lived with your mother,” Ben said.
“Why?” Emily said looking at me almost crying. I hated seeing her like this. She turned to me, and said…
“Jackie, did you want this, too?” She said. S**t! What was I going to say, now! I said in my head.
“Umm…yeah. I can’t take your stupid behavior!” I stopped myself from raising my voice at her. The look on her face was horrible. I didn’t want this to happen. I can’t live without Emily.
“Fine. I’ll pack and leave!” She said and walked to her room and gathered everything together…

It’s been about three months since we’ve talked to her. Ben and I were living our happy lives to the fullest. Nothing could get in between us.
“Hey, Jackie,” I heard someone say. I didn’t know who it was, so I turned around. I couldn’t believe it. “I know it’s been a long time, but I thought I would drop by to say hi,” that very familiar face was gazing at me.
“Umm…I’m sorry. Who are you?” I asked squinting. I was trying to get that face back into my memory.
“Oh, I’m sorry, I’m Collin.” He said back to me. I couldn’t believe it! I finally got over him like three years ago and now here he is. Collin Dyk. Ben came up behind me and hugged me.
“Jackie, who is this?” Ben said looking at Collin with his ‘jealous’ look he always gives boys whenever they talk to me.
“Oh, I’m sorry. I’m one of Jackie’s old friends from the 7th grade.” He said giving Ben a nasty smirk.
“Umm…” I began, “What are you doing here, Collin?” I wonder how he found me. This was weird.
“I’ve been looking for you for three years, I love you,” He said holing my hand. S**t! I thought in my head.
“I’m sorry, Collin. I’m Jackie’s boyfriend. So I suggest you leave…now.” Ben said very fiercely.
“I understand. Where’s Emily?” Collin said looking right at me.
“Umm…she had to move,” I continued, “Personal reasons.” I concluded. I was shocked. He looked SO hot.
“I see, well I better go. I’ve got a flight back to D.C. tonight. It was nice seeing you again, Jackie.” He continued. “Ben.”

That was weird. I thought I’d never see him again. I sighed.
“So what do we do now?” Ben asked me
“I don’t know. I’m thinking,” I said back to him. Ben was my best friend ever. “I guess we could go to the movies or something…” I said to him.
“Umm…yeah. That’s cool.” He said to me.
As we walked to my car, I heard my phone ring.
“Hello?” I answered. There was deep breathing coming from the other side of the line
“Why aren’t you looking for Emily? After all, I did kidnap her…you’ll never find her. Even if you do…you’ll have to get through me first,” The man said.
“I’m not kidding here! Who…are…you?” I yelled concerned into the phone. The man hung up before I could say anything more. Maybe Emily was right…there was someone coming for her.
“Jackie, who was that?” Ben asked me.
            I didn’t answer.
“Jackie!” HE said shaking me. I knew he was getting annoyed thinking I was “overreacting” or something.
            “It was a man…” I stuttered. “He’s got Emily…”
“Ok?” He said confused “your point?” He said.
Ugh. He was no help what so ever.
“We can’t just stand here and not do anything, Ben!” I yelled, “She’s my best friend! If you don’t want to come, then fine. I’m going.” I left without another word to him.

“Jackie, I’m coming with you,” He murmured in a soft voice.

Tori!!!!!! That was amazing! I loved the suspense, but a lot of the things in your story are relative to real life...Is the kidnapping thing...real?
