An Era of Attention

An Era of Attention

A Poem by Tatiana Lexia

I

In my youth, not long ago,

When life was just a simple pond,

And my mind had not yet begun to grow,

I thought about life, and the

People that were in it.

Just a tadpole in that pond,

So new, naive, and full of hope;

In childhood, one is very fond

Of most everyone, regardless of their

Past, never worrying about their future.

II

Flash forward, and the world is big;

The sun has grown darker, grey.

We realize that we are but twigs

In the tree of life, crooked and flowing,

Showing that nothing is as perfect as it once seemed.

Don't just twirl in the warmth of the sun.

Don't pretend that life is a kingdom;

What needs work must be done,

In swift and graceful movements,

Void of any flaws, free of all mistakes.

III

Life gives you moments, old and new.

Some create you, some destroy your mind.

And some are revealed to but a select few.

One day, when life gives me a chance,

I will grab onto the coattails and follow.

And in that moment, when it comes,

I shall follow like a child,

But listen like I'm grown.
