One Second Too Late

One Second Too Late

A Poem by Crifa

Running toward that last hope,
Grasping for that glimpse of light.
Holding tight, pretending to cope,
You stay restless through the night.

Flashbacks over that dreadful day,
Waves consume her, take her away.
Why didn't you save her from the sea,
An almost hero is all you could be.

Slapping and slipping on her soft skin,
You breathed deep and blew.
No pulse, no pressure, coming within,
Watching was all you could do.

Through every tear you shed grew love,
Love unknown until this date.
The light takes her from heaven above,
Because you my friend, were one second too late.

This, in my opinion, is one of your best. Realistic with the flashbacks, descriptive with the details, and the realization in the last paragraph just sent waves of heat over me.
"Love unknown until this date." that is a beautiful line as it brings upon something so sad, but yet so true of human nature: sometimes you don't know true love until it's too late. That mixed with the last line brought a flawless poem. I'm impressed, keep up the amazing work

I'm puzzled...when I first read this intensely brilliant piece...I thought to myself "hmm...death gripped her." But then I read it a second and third time and came to two more thoughts. Her spirit died in a manner...but her body continued as a hollow shadow of what she used to be...then I saw that he lost her love...like she decided that she should be without him and in turn he was trying everything he could to reach her heart once again and gain her attention to breathe life back into the love which had for that moment ceased to thrive. (And I only say he because I read it that way) but anyone can be a hero to another. Intensely brilliant piece...layered depending on where one's mind is at the time of enjoyment. :)

It seems we are always a second too late. Fate is cruel..it obeys no rules. This was honestly a gorgeous read. High scores.
