The Provincial Summer Rose

The Provincial Summer Rose

A Poem by Thomas Lyre
"

A sonnet in which the speaker ponders the progression of a loving relationship from the youthful naivety to the solitary solemn despair.

"

The Provincial Summer Rose

June breathes warm embers of love at my cheek,
The kind that beckons one’s head to repose
And think no more of the wan and the meek,
But of the provincial summer Rose.
She that flirts among the forest shade
And lulls young lovers into summer dream
Till it seems like the Sun shall never fade
And beauty in her will forever gleam.
Shadows draw longer in the dying day
As the Sun falls from his haven on high,
Although our lovers, in twilight, still lay
Till darkness destroys the light of her eye.
The fire we had will fall to darkness too,
And fill our hearts with love we can’t renew.

Author's Note

Thomas Lyre
The rhythm in this piece still seems a bit off to me. After a bit of editing I have decided to leave it in its current state and pursue other, incomplete writings. My first attempts at the sonnet form.

Mostly it ends sadly as the writer doesn't believe in eternal love, love that never dies.
