Thrift Store

Thrift Store

A Poem by C Peril
"

Folks, read this. If you don't like it you'll get your money back - 100%, guaranteed!

"
Today I volunteered at a thrift store
I was tasked with putting books out for sale
When I spotted a collection of books on English literature
I couldn't help but give them a premium place

I constructed a narrative from this
Maybe the books were donated by a retired professor
Who had animated many a disaffected student
He had injected their dreary worlds
with tales that would enrich them

By selling on his books to a fresh faced teen...
that was maybe eager to do a little research
on what they'd be encountering this summer when
then turned up to university

Perhaps I'd married two kindred souls Perhaps
their lives touched, momentarily

That was the work of my hands today

I can rest
I've done good

Ah! As would I, the most sacred spot for English literature - just can't help it! There is indeed a marrying and a merrying at secondhand bookshops although the individual parties usually never meet in person. And yes, you have done more than good. With the swift demise of the printed page it will be a costlier, direr, more obfuscating transaction - this pre-loved books 'work.'

Okay, I bought the copy of Batman. What can I say? I like old comic books. (smile) I really did buy a copy Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, at the Salvation Army Thrift Store for 99 cents. I'm still reading it. It was in perfect condition.

Oh you did! You did good with your hands, and with your poem. I love thrift stores, and always searched for antique schoolbooks. I'm glad people like you do homage to those books, and give them pride of place.

perhaps you did.. one never knows how another will g=receive the gifts of another's hand.. perhaps the narrator's imaginings prompted an advantageous display.. well done..
