Dämmerung

Dämmerung

A Poem by Austin

We are prisoners

Setting ourselves on fire

Breathing in the flames

The smoke fills our lungs

Like a fresh summer breeze

The stars deny us

They keep to themselves, turn up their noses

They prefer to watch us die, shining just as bright

As the day when we were born

I wish when I had seen others suffer, I had done something

We should never forgive those who watch others suffer, and do nothing

I should never forgive myself

And when we reach the end

We will clutch the steel bars of time

And look out to a higher dimension

Maybe look up at the ceiling, but the stars won't comfort us there anymore

We will ask questions, questions the layers of dust

Will never be able to answer

What did we do to deserve this life sentence?

Something cruel in a past life, or a sick joke of those above

Those of us who offer up their repentance are taken

Glass shatters and skids across the pavement

A tragedy on the steps to the alter

And the blood leaks through the cracks in the walls

The doors will swing open

We will one day go, where even the stars will go

And this keeps me warm inside

Inside these prison walls
