Ode to Sleep I

Ode to Sleep I

A Poem by Rocans
"

Okay sleep, I have written a poem about you. Indulge me please.

"

Come hither sleep! Why hath thou forsaken me again?

Withdrawing your service from my aching brain

I feel your feeble beckonings for my indulgence

But bombardment of thoughts splits evasive somnolence

Domino effect not even my queen of hearts can reverse

Though I traverse immersed within her soporific factory

The curse of insomnia persists with its annoying torture

Refusing my stark reality’s ephemeral departure

I beg at times to unite again with the cousin of death

My long lost friend whom I miss with such profound depth

Sometimes, desperate I select fine wines to have shut- eye effect

In vain…but in my veins are alcoholic spirits of regret

I remain in debt of sleep, nostalgic and wanting for dreams

Welcoming even the nightmares of my nightly haunting scenes

And the daunting task of rousing my body of lead

From the gravitational pull of the assaulting bed

I just had this conversation with my husband this morning but not so eloquently. I have been suffering from a bad bout of insomnia and it's plagued me off and on throughout my life. I simply cannot shut my brain off, sometimes I think it is actually a machine and not organic at all. But back to your poem because that is what this is about. You capture the desperation and the solutions you know will only be temporary and ultimately make you feel worse. You bargain, you plead, you watch those sleeping around you and wish you had the heart and selfishness to wake them to help you in those dark quiet hours. I love the voice in this piece and the come hither way you have written the poem. It is excellent. The words that resounded with me were these:

I beg at times to unite again with the cousin of death
My long lost friend whom I miss with such profound depth
Sometimes, desperate I select fine wines to have shut- eye effect
In vain…but in my veins is alcoholic spirits of regret

Sleep takes on more importance than just to rest our bodies it is a time that we can escape from our problems and our spinning minds. Perhaps we can lose ourselves in a dream and leave our weariness behind. I truly love this poem. It gets a fav. from me.

I beg at times to unite again with the cousin of death...

So much happens in sleep - especially for the creative mind. Without this brief taste of death, it is difficult to face the harsh realities of Life. I hope you have appeased the gods of sleep with this clever ode, Rocans!
