Emma

Emma

A Poem by Falling Leaf.

The scars on your wrists ripple as your frail body quakes.
Faint pink lines crisscrossing in an endless alabaster sea.
Head down, chestnut curtains hanging over locked blue doors,
you've taken life one tiny footstep at a time.

Mountains forever loomed behind you,
silently screaming in your ears.
Their wails were too high pitched for anyone else to hear.

Your cries pierced the fog in my mind.
Your pain is an ugly kind of real.

I knocked on the doors, I peered in the windows,
I called your name.
The curtains remain drawn tight,
and everything inside is dark.

You lost yourself in the light of a liquor store sign,
at the time of night when no sensible person is awake.

They declared the cause of death OD,
and I gripped your icy fingers before ground swallowed you whole.
The kids at school said you were just another depressed girl,
but they don't know.
They will never know.

Your legacy will live on within me.

Sleep well, darling.

Yet another masterfully woven piece of poetry. It seems as if with each one I read, I feel more passion, more conviction, more pain through your words. This is utterly beautiful. I mean, the subject matter isn't so much a beautiful occurrence, but true and I think very relateable. But the poem itself is pretty f*****g amazing.

I think I caught wind of some of your symbolism here, with the chestnut curtains hanging over blue locked doors. I kinda assumed that to be a metaphor for her eyes being closed. But I could be completely wrong lol. Either way, I like poems that require me to read and reread to try and grasp some of the images and understand what some of the symbols mean. I loved this one.

You're close. It's her hair hanging in her eyes. Thank you for the review. :)
A sad poem. People get lost and few can see the fall. Your poem described a life lost too soon to alcohol and disappointment. Thank you for sharing the memory of a person lost too soon.

It's beautiful but tragic Solis. In fact it's very deep, an emotion coming from deep within the heart.

wow! also takes my breath away .. whew! i find your poem hauntingly powerful .. i am at once captivated and repelled at the same time .. in your note you say in memoriam .. so it is personal .. i am so sorry for the loss you suffer .. i think you did a very fine job with "Emma" .. you have acknowledged her life before, during and after her suicide with sensitivity and care .. your metaphor with the curtains is stunning .. we dont forget those that have touched our lives and now mine has been touched by Emma's .. and again i am sorry for your loss
