Prologue: One Week Earlier...A Chapter by E. M. DuBoisA mysterious force is at hand...The room was black, the only illuminating light coming from the center of it. The files were on a long “table,” looking more like an office meeting than a gathering of the most powerful celestial beings. Sixth of them. They stood around the rectangle of flat, white light that the pile was stacked in the center of. On the top of it all was a special file that glowed golden. The beings were impossible things to see. Only other spiritual entities could look upon them, and even they would not fully understand what they were looking at. They rarely revealed their true forms to special individuals. And the golden file they were looking at belonged to just such a person. To all else, they cloaked themselves in a veil of light. In the darkness of the room stood two individuals, concealed by sheer nervousness in the presence of such beings. “This is the next one,” said one of the beings. Its voice was one of a harp. “We understand.” The taller person in the shadows said. “You know your assignment,” another one said, its voice the same as the first. “We do,” the second, shorter person confirmed. His voice sounded younger than the first person’s. “We need her,” another being explained. “She is the key to everything, more than any other Principal.” “I’ll begin this personally, do not worry,” the first person assured them. “She won’t know we are there until she needs to.” “Yes, you shall,” the first Being said. “Use your power sparingly. The mere presence of them could attract a human’s attention.” “That’s quite a compliment, Council Member,” the taller person said in amusement. “But what if… others detect our presence?” The Beings were all silent for a moment, but the taller person knew they had already made up their minds of what to do. They had done so centuries before. And it was almost impossible to change those minds, either. “You won’t have to worry about that,” the first one said, finally. “We are giving you the freedom to be… inventive. Take the initiative if things go awry. But be warned…” It trailed off. “Yes, Orcakii?” the first person asked. “If you cannot improvise in a discrete manor, we will have no choice but to replace you,” Orcakii finished. “Our reputation speaks for itself!” the second person burst out. “Oh, yes it does, my boy,” Orcakii agreed. The taller person quickly spoke. “What he meant was that we won’t fail you, and you know that. It was why we were chosen.” “Yes,” Orcakii said. “Now, please, be gone on your errand…” The golden file raised off of the pile and floated to them, slowly losing its light as it reached them. “Oh course…” The taller person reached out and took it, tucking it under his arm. He bowed his head, and the shorter di the same. They left together, walking as one. The light from one Being faintly dimmed their appearance, showing their hooded figures before they disappeared into a hall. “They actually are limiting us now?” the shorter person asked when he was sure they were out of earshot, which was almost an hour later. “After your last accident, I not surprised…” the first person’s tone was scornful. “It was an accident…” the second’s voice was meek. “Amelia…. She….” “You got too involved with Earhart. When things got out of hand, you took it upon yourself to finish the mission. That’s why we were detected. Never use your power like that again.” “I understand…” the shorter figure sighed, and they crossed over to Earth. © 2018 E. M. DuBoisAuthor's Note
