What’s Left of Me

What’s Left of Me

A Poem by SovietDog
"

Little piece about heartbreak. Inspired by a lot of music. Kind of meant to be half sung in my head, certainly more lyrical

"
If you take what’s best of me
Then all that’s what’s left of me
Is this broken down body
And these tired old sad words

Cuz we used to laugh and listen
In your parents old kitchen
But now that’s forgotten
Just like my bitter verse

You’ve left me without joy
My very own Helen of Troy
Battling for lost love
I’ll never get back

But still I continue
with these old bones and sinew
Fighting for nothing
But a desperate hurt

Cuz that hurt’s all I’ve got
I lost though I fought
A fractured old soul
I tried to control

I loved like I lost
Covered in frost
A frozen broken heart
Only you could warm up

But still you’ve my love
That broken down dove
The romantic hate
That I can’t escape

Memories lost to time
Uncommitted to rhyme
I dwell on our past
And I will to the last

I think on our history
To drown out the misery
Of that decrepit old battlefield
They used to call love

Memory won’t let me
Let go of your face
Forced to remember
Your lost love and grace
