Muse

Muse

A Poem by Molly

Muse singing softly,

whispering in my ear

lines unwritten

and poems unheard,

please stop distracting me!

For your light and power

blind me, compel me

to write and write and write,

each scratch of the pen

fed with the blood of

my beating self,

and prevent me from

living in the physical world.

Each firework blast

of inspiration that

you rain into my head

is so lovely and beautiful

that I am temporarily removed

from my lesser reality

and am violently propelled

into a world of golden light

and peaceful warmth.

Muse, thou lovely,

beautiful lady,

flit quietly, flying

quite close to my head,

unfairly invisible,

sweetly whispering to me

of explosive hues,

magnificent scenes of epicry,

and of strings of words

needed by mankind.

I am your willing servant,

mouthpiece for the ideas,

feelings, and abstractions

you are full to bursting with,

but your trumpet is tired!

Exhausted from its heavy load

though it relishes the labor.

My tether to this world,

already so frayed and weathered,

weakens each time

you whisper your words of inspiration.

Is it your wish to remove me?

To take me from this world I love

into golden, sunlit divinity?

Muse, though I love you,

sincerely and deeply,

don’t take me away just yet,

for I have responsibilities

and have not lived to my

FULL potential.

There are still places

for me to explore,

lovers for me to woo.

And forget you not

that there is one out there

who needs me to be his muse;

simply, I have life yet to live.

Continue your lovely singing,

keep whispering to me,

but realize that though I love you,

I have others to love too.

Fantabulous we all have a muse at times in our lives I can relate. I like the way you bring the imagination into the writing conversation.

'Continue your lovely singing,

I love the way you ended it with these lines. It was a delightful treat to read.

Beautiful poem. I've never thought of writing a poem about writing. Ingenious idea but my favorite part is the last stanza. It shows that although we love to write and are willing to write, we also need to live life as others do and experience love, friendship; a sense of belonging in the real world as well as the world we create in our writing.

Oh how lovely! Chained to your pen and ink by whispers only you can hear. This write is enchanting, and oh what a lovely prison to be held captive in! Nothing is worse than writers block. Dance in the light, for it is sweet as the rarest honey when it flows like this! Still, brilliant idea to address it as you have!

I love this piece. The words truly describe what it feels like to be held by our muses ... wonderful and frustrating all rolled into one.
