Synopsis for Well Done Partner!

A Story by The Shadow King
"

Dominique Van Hudson is a 26 years old police officer in a fairly average city of Brookshire, near London. He is dedicated, diligent, smart and perfect at his work. Not

"

It was a tiring day for Dominique. Not because he had been catching criminals or solving any hard-to-crack case. The day was quite opposite actually. Reporting back to the station in the evening, Dominique realized how uneventful a day it was for him. Nothing really happened today to make it seem productive enough for him. He just spent his day patrolling and keeping things in check. And that was exactly why he was feeling tired-mentally. Sometimes it makes him feel restless when his mind is not engaged for long, even if he is alright physically.

A quiet sigh escaped his lips when he entered the doors of the station and went towards his desk. Such a boring day!

“Hey Dom!” Jolly, one of his colleagues greeted him. His given name is James but he earned himself the title because of his jolly nature and it just stuck with him. Besides, James doesn’t even suit him as good as Jolly does.

“How many times do I have to tell you to not call me that? I hate it!” Dominique groaned. He never knew why his father loved that Canadian singer so much to name his own child the same. He had seen the music videos and he found it silly. But what can be done now? He was too little to do anything about it.

“You don’t like your name in general, mate. So don’t blame me. I have to call you something when addressing you.” Jolly teased.

“Anyways, what were you here for?” Dominique chose to ignore his teasing like always.

“Nothing in particular. Though I may have some news for you.”

“And what will be that?”

Jolly looked around before leaning close to tell it in his ears, as if revealing a secret, “There's a buzz going on. Chief is going to give you a new case and it might be great for you in your career, if you are successful in solving it."

"Really!" Dominique exclaimed, interested.

Jolly nods, "Yeah man. And I heard that Mark is desperate to get his hands on that case. So he won't be pleased with you if the chief chooses you."

"I'll deal with him if needed. Don’t worry."

"Well good luck then!" and Jolly left to continue with what he was doing before.

Sitting at his desk Dominique thought of the possibilities of this news being true. If it really happens then this is the news of the century for him. He might even become a hero if he solves this case.

“Well if it isn’t the perfect cop.” He was interrupted from his thoughts by someone. He didn’t even have to look up to know who it was. That guy always gives him bad vibes.

“Hey Mark! What’s up?” Dominique half-heartedly greeted.

“I suppose you already know of the rumor. Just so you know, I won’t let you get that case.” Mark challenged.

“Good luck with that.” Dominique boredly said and went his way.

He never entertains the guy and dodges his attempts to get a reaction out of him, as much as he can. Dominique never understands why the guy has a personal vendetta against him.

Not dwelling on this thought more he just chose a random file and went through it. He still has forty minutes to go before he is off-duty.

After just ten minutes of scanning through the file he felt a tap on his shoulder. It was Jolly again.

“Hey Dom! Chief is calling you.” He had a large grin on his face.

“Now?”

“Yup! Guess the rumors are true. Good luck!”

Dominique nodded and just went his way to his chief’s cabin.

He entered when he got the permission to. Roger, his chief, smiled at him when he saw Dominique. The fifty three year old man has always admired Dominique for his qualities and character. He was highly impressed and wished if he was lucky enough to have a son like him. He really adored Dominique and slightly favored him as well.

It is rightful for him to think like that. Dominique is one of the best ones in his batch and has also aced his exams. His strength was not to be taken lightly, despite his short height of around 5’9 and somewhat tiny stature. However, his leaned and slightly muscled body as well his clean undercut hairstyle make up for it. His almost owlish and icy grey eyes-that was so unusual a feature, along with his deep voice were enough to bring culprits to spill the beans.  Even though he looked like a sweet and calm person, he had this dark aura around him when he was in his work demeanour.

His records of work were incredible. Starting from catching pick-pocketers to notorious gangsters, he had become one of the most capable officers the police department has. The chief had seen him as a disciplined, respected, diligent, intelligent and capable young man.

Dominique was respected for his work and was also envied by many. But he didn't care and continued to work like this. Whatever cases were handed over to him, they were solved within record time.

He was assiduous in his work and nothing feared him or made him back away from doing his duty. And all of this he had done single handedly. He believed that being without a partner is what has helped him excel in his work.

"Did you call me chief?" Dominique inquired

The chief smiled and nodded at him. Dominique was asked to take a seat so the chief can discuss something important with him.

Once he was settled down Roger began the briefing.

"I believe you already have an idea why I called you here."

Dominique gave a curt nod,"I certainly do, but it'll be great if you provide me with the details."

Roger hummed "You see, since the past two months we have been reported of missing people often times. Though it is not something unusual but what's disturbing is that when we were able to locate them, they were already dead. Not only that, they all were commonly missing some parts of their body. Those parts which held most value in the organs' market. Around almost 15 cases are reported. It is suspected that this is all done by one person or gang. They might be a psychopath or whoever. Hence I need you to get started on it asap. The postmortem reports are also seriously concerning. So I need you to give this case your full priority and don't rest until you have solved it."

Dominique nodded, "I'll do my best Roger and try to solve it asap."

Chief hummed in response, "Here, this is the file with full details of this case. Go to your desk and take a look. Start today itself." he dismissed Dominique handing the case file.

"I have full faith in you. I believe you'll solve it like the rest of your cases."

Dominique assured and thanked the chief once again. When he got up and was about to make his way outside, the chief stopped him.

"And Dominique, one more thing.” The chief continued. “You are required to work on this case with a partner. He'll be here tomorrow."

Dominique blinked once, twice at the information. He couldn't believe his ears and was completely appalled by the time the information registered in his brain. He was totally against the idea.

To confirm that he didn't misheard, Dominique asked again.

"I'm sorry, but I think I heard wrong. Did you just say partner?" He hoped to get a different answer. One that will dismiss his concerns.

"You heard all right, Officer. I am asking you to have a partner for this." Roger answered looking straight up in the other’s eyes. He had anticipated a negative reaction as such and was prepared for it.

"I am sorry, but I am going to decline that idea. You know I work alone. There's no need for a partner for me. It won't be more than a disturbance to have someone assist me everywhere."

Roger sighed heavily and began talking to Dominique in a tone one would use to pacify a child, making them see your reasons. "I'm very well aware how your methods are. I didn't want that even. But this case is of utmost priority and the headquarters believe that it's not a single person's job. So they have instructions for me to assist you with a partner."

"Bu-but chief" Dominique tried to say something but was cut off.

"No arguments young man. Everything is settled and you are expected to follow orders. You may go back to your desk now and start working." The chief dismissed him again in a stern voice, leaving no room for him to say anything.

Dominique, with a defeated look, left to his desk. He slumped in his chair and groaned, completely oblivious of the evil smirk Mark had directed towards him.

"Oh God! Help me!", He wished himself luck.

So in the end, his day was not that uneventful, afterall.
