1. The Arrival

1. The Arrival

A Chapter by Edward

The Model-T turned left onto a dirt road called Swamp Lake road. It is passed noon on a Sunday. I sit in the back of the car, looking out to the country side, livestock eating grass, crops swaying in the wind waiting to be harvested. A man wearing dirty old clothing is picking apples off the trees. He looks at us as we drive by. “Well umm … Jack is it?” Said a man in the passenger seat. He wore a black suit with a red tie around his neck; his blackish grey hair was gelled to the left side of his head. He adjusts his glasses as he opens a file. “Ah yes here we are. Name is Jack Snow; you were born on September 24th at Green Valley Hospital to Jane and Michael Snow. You are fifteen correct?” I nod my head. He continues reading, “Brown eyes, brown hair, 6 foot 1... You are fifteen and you are 6’1?” He stares at me in disbelief. “Yes sir” I say “My father is 6’4” He nods as he closes my file. “Well we are almost at the Asylum, so sit tight it shouldn’t be long now.”

That word makes me shiver… asylum. I’m not crazy, am I? Just because I bit someone doesn’t mean I’m crazy. No… bit isn’t the proper word; I saved my friends life, Alice Farnsworth. She had fallen into the river that was by her house during her mother’s annual party. So I jumped in and put her arm in my mouth in order to get back to the shore for the current was picking up. I didn’t know I had punctured her skin. Her mother wasn’t so happy with me saving her daughter’s life because she scratched my face about 10 times. It took 5 men to pry her away from me. The next day, we went to court and I was pronounced insane. Mrs. Farnsworth’s party was on Friday, we went to the court on Saturday, and here I sit on Sunday in the back of a car heading to an insane asylum. Before I left this morning my family was able to visit me for an hour. Since I was pronounced insane, I was separated from everyone in town. I spelt Saturday night in the town hall. When my family visited, my mother gave me some of my father’s dress clothes. They left the room so I could change and when they came back we talked for the last time. My father barley said anything, my little sister just sat there. She didn’t understand what was going on. When it was time to go, my father and sister left quickly while my mother stayed behind. “Jack, you listen to me ok. You are not crazy. No matter what people say you’re not. You saved a person’s life.” She looks to the door and back at me. “No matter what, I’ll be thinking about you. You always remember that my thoughts are with you, and I also spoke with Alice Farnsworth, her grandfather is head of the asylum that you are heading to. She wants to thank you personally so look out for her. I must go, take care Jack.” She left the room.

I hear my name being called. I look towards Mr. Apollo “Wake up Jack, we are here.” I snap out of my day dream and look to my right and see five big grey buildings. There were three big old oak trees looming in front of the main building. The Model-T pulls up the drive to the double doors at the front. Mr. Apollo and I get out of the car and make are way to the door. I couldn’t help myself looking at the windows. At first I saw darkness, and then faces began to appear. “Enjoying the attention, Jack?” I looked back at Mr. Apollo. He was standing on the landing of the staircase that leads to the doors. We walked through the front doors, which lead into the main lobby of the asylum. The room was grey like the rest of the building. A red carpet leads from the front doors to the front desk. Paintings cover some of the walls but some look depressing so I don’t look at them. A fireplace is to my left with chairs and a coffee table. The coffee table had many books scattered around on its surface. There were also dead plants with cobwebs and dead flies upon the dirt. There were three doors in the lobby, one on the far left, one to the far right and one behind the secretary’s desk.

Mr. Apollo and I approach the secretary’s desk. She looks at us as we approach. “Can I help you?” she says in a rough manly voice. She has a white lab coat on, with black hair pulled up into a bun with a hair net, her black glasses were on the brim of her nose. She had a muscular build (for a woman). “Yes I’m here to sign in a patient.” said Mr. Apollo. She grabbed a paper off her desk and gave it to Mr. Apollo. “Of course you are, why else would anyone come to this place?” Her voice sounded a bit Russian. Mr. Apollo finished signing the papers and gave it back to the lady. She stamped the papers and signed them. “Well, I guess my business is done take care Jack.” said Apollo. He headed for the front door and waved and exited the asylum. I turned back to the secretary. “So what’s your name? How long have you worked here?” I asked. She looked up at me. “I can’t acquire you with that information. But I can inform you that my name is Helga.” she said “Hey look over there!” said Helga. I looked towards the door, all I saw was the door “There’s nothing over there…” WHAK was all I heard. My vision when blurry and everything went dark.
