A Johnson City Café

A Johnson City Café

A Poem by Stephanie Snyder
"

Written while at a Student Poet's Society meeting (my first).

"

A green pencil turning blue;
Mild singing behind me.
I feel inspired like never before.
Caroline's words are mad flies in my head,
Incessant and unyielding.

Freshman year is an eye opener.
I've met people I didn't think existed,
I've heard stories of Long Island mothers,
Seen blue-gray skies filled with days' worth of rain,
And imagined strawberry fields that know no bounds.

And for the first time in my life,
For the first time ever,
I've discovered I don't have to lean on people,
That I can stand on my own,
But people, friends, are blessings, curses,
Living representations of equilibrium.

Sitting in a café, my muse sits next to me
And for the first time in months, years,
She has her hand on my shoulder
And she's whispering sweet nothings in my ear,
Daring me to be the revolutionist I know I am
And finally, I see:

College has changed me.
