Mica the coyote and Lusawa his mate

Mica the coyote and Lusawa his mate

A Poem by m.s.early

His mother named him Mica
from the words of the Dakota
because his essence transcended
all the others in many packs.

His mother's gaze;
she found in him
the passion of the poets,
an impossible wisdom,
the hunger of the great intellects,
and an unyielding fear she would never understand.

Mica's understanding of the moon,
gave him poems that he sang at the changing
of the seasons.
The young females wished his wooing,
and not from afar.

The males, sires of their own,
ambitious, opportunistic,
sung songs of their own to the moon,
nipped at Mica,
but being wise and prepared,
he left them wounded
at the place they challenged him.

Lisawu was the young female,
named by the Hopi,
loved by Mica because of her eyes,
soft like an owl,
her fur as soft as feathers,
her scent drawn by the sky,
dissipating like the songs to the winter moon
fading as wind beneath the wings of the owl.

He gathered her unto himself
for fear she would be another's
until she became the foyer of his heart,
that should anything be close or enter his soul
must first be loved by her.

The two trekked the prairie for many seasons.
And their pups grew beneath the cool soft moon.
And Mica loved his sweet Lisawu
and protected her as a treasure
for fear that his songs to the moon
would become saddened howls,
poems stolen by the younger coyotes
should his heart not have the front
of Lisawu's sweet owl eyes
and her breath of wind beneath owl wings
and her sweet coos
which only his ears were meant to hear.

'Mica's understanding of the moon, ~ gave him poems that he sang at the changing ~ of the seasons. '

The All About that means so much and, should always be.

This wonderful poem makes me think of myths recited and told in the flickering shadows of a fire when past dances with the now and needs be relived! I sense the virtues and inherent instincts of your coyote, the way he takes life and uses its power, but somehow there is the height of gentleness.. in that final stanza. This is another world for me. Unique.

Amazing and wonderful words shared my friend. You wrote with the experience of a old Native American pen. I liked the feel of nature and the story line in the poem. Outstanding work.

Thank you John!
A native American love story, though there is much more here. Mica's loving mother recognised his many special attributes. Mica was able to look after himself when nipped by those other coyotes. They were left wounded because he was prepared. One step ahead of the pack. The lovely Lidawu grew to become the air beneath his metaphorical wings He knew he had to treasure her to keep her. This is a delightful read. I could imagine this would sit well in a book for children with colourful illustrations. Not only a wonderful story but there are many lessons here too for young children to think about.

Thank you for such an insightful review. I appreciate your critique.
An enjoyable fable, MS.....it reads like a native American tale...the two Coyote's being the personified characters of self and a lover. He howling at the moon, fighting off his foes and then whisking his desired across the prairie on their journey of a lifetime. It has a touch of Disney mixed in here, too. It's a very descriptive tale and I enjoyed the read. 🌹

I had never thought of the Disney aspect, lol.

Thank you 😊
Coyotes don't care what others think...they just act on their instincts...
poets who do that usually write best...they don't run in packs...
most coyotes i have seen are alone...there are several where I live...but they don't write poems and don't have mothers who don't understand their work.
Sweet owl eyes, full of wisdom...
poets might have owl eyes...and might be full of wisdom...but if no one is around to hear the hooted words, no one learns.
