three years

three years

A Poem by m.s.early
"

a tribute to merle haggard

"
freight train whistles moaned and called
to a boy in dirt poor america
away from the financially oppressed
to three years in san quentin
learned lessons from old cons
of success in the bad ways of men
and then a crack in the monotony
curious how it would come off
and herded us cons in front of our guest
a seminal moment in san quentin prison
suffering the truancy sentence of a child
an awakening, a redemption of sin
and years later in the faces of thousands
he sang to his mama's good name
and maybe a weight lifted from his chest
after three years in san quentin

'three years'

This time in prison was not wasted nor any other experience of this man, Merle Haggard. Haggard and glorious and many are the life experiences of this artist as are many of us. Music is where we identify with our times and lives. I like how you brought to mind this musician and artist and gave him a face once again.
Blessings,
Kathy
