Set Me On Fire

Set Me On Fire

A Poem by Victoria Harlequin

Set Me On Fire

Just gonna stand there and watch me burn

Well that’s alright because I like the way it hurts

Just gonna stand there and hear me cry

Well that’s alright because I love the way you lie

I love the way you lie

In the beginning, I wouldn’t have seen it

I wouldn’t have predicted it

That good feeling you gave me changed

With it comes a tinge of pain,

A little fire in our love

The bruises on my skin, growing

With every push and shove…

You show me that you care

What you do to me - it hurts so good

Pull on my hair again

Show me that I mean the world to you

Claw at my skirt and scream at me

Tell me how you’d die without me

Throw me against the wall, spit in my face

Beg for me to be your one and only

Lock me in the bathroom when you leave

Walk away with a passionate hate

Break me, tear me, & wear me down

Don’t stop until you see me dying

Just gonna stand there and watch me burn

Well that’s alright because I like the way it hurts

Just gonna stand there and hear me cry

Well that’s alright because I love the way you lie

I love the way you lie

I love the way you lie

She doesn’t kiss me the way she used to
Doesn’t show happiness when she’s with me

I don’t see those fireworks in her eyes

Ones that lit up when I said those words

Words that used to mean a promise

Whenever I say them now, she laughs

Lashing out and yelling in anger

Explaining how much she hates me

How she could never love a man like me

I wanna leave her so bad, but I can’t

Every time she slaps and scratches

My skin slowly starts fading

It’s my fault, I made her this way

I shoulda’ done more, cared more

We’re losing our grip each day

She’s abusing us both in every way

Her heart is beating because of my pain

Mine is breaking because she’s so vain

I said I’d never leave her and I never will

I’ll stay until she stops hating me

Just gonna stand there and watch me burn

Well that’s alright because I like the way it hurts

Just gonna stand there and hear me cry

Well that’s alright because I love the way you lie

I love the way you lie

I love the way you lie

My breath quickens when she snaps at me

Adrenaline kicks in when she resists me

I don’t mean to slap or punch her

But she sets bombs off inside me

I made a vow to never hit her,

But the b***h knows how to spark me

It gets me mad when I see her cry

Knowing that I’m the reason rips me apart

Yet, I continue to make her suffer

Throwing acid coated words in the air

And watching the debris fall down her face

There’s nothing I can do besides cause wars

So even if I see her hurting, I persist

Too lost in the grief to notice she’s drowning

Groaning out for an SOS; weak and frail

I can’t let her out of my sight

So I lock the house and throw the key out

She’s never gonna’ escape my labyrinth

While I sit against the door crying

I feel her sobs through the walls

And as I light the last match

I close my eyes and hear her wail out -

Just gonna stand there and watch me burn

Well that’s alright because I like the way it hurts

Just gonna stand there and hear me cry

Well that’s alright because I love the way you lie

I love the way you lie

I love the way you lie

So I lock the house and throw the key out
She’s never gonna’ escape my labyrinth
While I sit against the door crying

Oh my, what a powerful piece of writing, the woman and the offender, I am in awe, because to write from both angles takes experience of pain, and the lay out was also very effective, and I do understand, having had the experience the pain of both partners when the sobbing begins.Excellent.
