Longing

Longing

A Poem by TheMalady
"

What are you thinking?

"
Look into the distance
And there flashes into one's mind
A fleeting memory
A sudden rush of melancholia...
One cannot name
How the world seemed to glow;
When the heart quietly prays
Of that long-lost song...
Lips purse
As the songs pass by;
The heart cannot hold on
For so long, so short...
Upwards, to the sky
Infinite and blue;
One's eyes seek
What one has always been asking...

This is a good poem. I enjoy the lightness in its tone, yet it portrays feelings that go beyond the soft edges of the piece. Although, I feel as though something's missing from this. I can't exactly think of what it is, but it seems to be lacking in translation. But, as it is, it's a marvelous piece. Good work.

'How the world seemed to glow;
When the heart quietly prays'

'Infinite and blue;
One's eyes seek
What one has always been asking...'

There is a beautiful spaciousness in these lines in which the eternal seeking is expressed, reaching beyond the limitations of the human heart's longings.

Really nice poem, I enjoyed the read. I did notice the song (I guess it's a song) you embedded at the end doesn't actually work. It's just plain HTML. Maybe you could put it in your Author's Note instead?

Plaintively beautiful, this poem has an image of its own, and wishes to be probed further, just like the sky.
Melancholia is such an underrated state of feeling, it does so much to the poetic mind.

Thanks for sharing this.

Best,
M.

You really expressed well the wistful reflection of a fading memory and our desperate and often futile attempts to hold on to it. Nicely done.

Thanks a lot, Emily! I'm happy knowing that you've read this poem. :)
Ah, melancholia, my oldest and most intimate friend, woven throughout the fabric of my personality.
"The heart cannot hold on for so long, so short." This line really grabbed me. I have experienced it many times while trying to hang on to a sweet but fleeting memory from long ago.
As always, fine work. You tapped into a deep part of my existential story, or rather, my story tapped into yours.

Your poems are really beautiful. Fills the reader with a sense of innate joy while filling them with a melancholic atmosphere. Sometimes, nostalgic too. Thank you for sharing this. :)
