Chapter 8: A Selfless PresentationA Chapter by LydiaRyan followed the officer, whose name tag said Rolan Payne, into a small interrogation room at the far end of the corridor. "Take a seat right there, and one of our other officers will be with you in just a minute," he instructed him, pointing towards the small off white table, and matching chair in the corner.
Ryan nodded his head, and took a seat in the chair opposite from the wall. He took a deep breath and ran his hands over the smooth, cool table. You're doing it for her. Just remember that. You're doing it for her, and Lauren. For everyone who-, his thoughts were interrupted by the slow and highpitched creeaakk of the door opening.
A dark skinned man in a white button down shirt, and brown khaki pants stepped into the room. He wore a serious face, and held a notepad in his hands. Ryan flashed him a small smile, internally hoping that wasn't too cheery for the occasion once he realized the officer didn't plan on returning it.
"So, you must be Mr. Hester. I've been told that you have a few things you'd like to tell about the Lauren Holt case," he said, raising his eyebrows as he pulled out the chair across from Ryan and took a seat.
Ryan fidgeted slightly in his seat, and nodded again. "Um, yes, sir. I did have a couple things," he replied quickly. Almost too fast for hisself to understand.
The officer gave him an annoyed glance. "And what might those things be?" he pressed, gesturing towards Ryan.
You're so stupid. Ryan let out a nervous laugh, and pressed his palms together. "Oh yeah, sorry. Well, I've heard.....some people mention that they suspect that Lauren's ex-boyfriend, Drew Matthews, might have had something to do with the...y'know....with what happened to her," he still had a hard time saying the word 'murder' in the same sentence as Lauren's name," I mean since the breakup was still pretty fresh. I kind of suspected it too just by the way he's been acting."
The officer jotted down something on his notebook, and then returned his gaze over at Ryan. "And who were the people that were saying these things?" he quizzed.
The way he stared at him made Ryan more uncomfortable than he had ever been in his life. "Well, they said they'd rather stay anonymous for Kels-," he stopped and cleared his throat," I-I mean for their safety," he continued, hoping that the man didn't pay much attention to his slipup.
The man gave him an odd look before excusing hisself from the room. He said that was all he needed to know for now, and that they'd call him if they needed anything else. Ryan quickly scribbled his number on the man's notebook, and quickly walked back out into the waiting room where he found Kelsey flipping through a magazine.
She glanced up once she noticed him walking towards her, and sat the magazine down on the table beside her. "That was quick. You were only back there for like thirty minutes," she commented as she stood up.
Ryan shrugged. He was just glad it was over, and that he could finally breath. "I know. C'mon, lets get out of here, alright?" He started towards the door, and Kelsey followed behind him. © 2012 LydiaAuthor's Note
