A few days had passed since Kelsey told Ryan about her secret. Today was Tuesday, and she was walking home from school. Her old Honda Accord had broken down on the way to school that morning. As she walked she heard footsteps behind her. She lived on a side road that not many people cam down, so she quickened her pace just in case.
"Kelsey."
She stopped abruptly almost tripping over her own feet. She'd know that voice anywhere. She turned around slowly to see Drew standing in front of her. At first glance no one would ever think someone like him could do what he did. He was a pretty nice looking kid. Tall, and well built. He had straight brown hair that brushed across his forehead, and his green eyes gave him a look of innocence.
Kelsey eyed him carefully, and crossed her arms over her chest. "What are you doing here? You live on the other side of town."
He stepped closer to her making Kelsey dig her nails into her own arm. She wanted to run, but she knew it would be of no use. He could outrun her easily.
"C'mon, Kels. You're not that naive are you? You know why I'm here. I'm here to give you a warning," he said, rasing his eyebrows as if waiting for her to say something.
She tensed up. There was no doubt in her mind that he knew. She stayed silent, though.
"Fine. Don't say anything, but I know you were there. And I think we both know that you better not tell."
"I don't know what you're talking about," Kelsey lied, looking up at him. She looked straight into his eyes. She couldn't let him see her cower.
He grabbed her by the arm, yanking her forward. Kelsey let out a yelp. He put his face right up to hers, so that she could feel his breath tickle her face. "What do you think I am? An idiot? I saw you, and you can't deny it," he half-whispered even though no one was around. His voice was so menacing.
Kelsey felt her hands start to tremble, and she stuck her free one in her jacket pocket. She stared back at him. "Even if I do know what you're talking about you can't do anything to me. You might be able to get away with it once, but not twice," she said through clenched teeth.
He laughed lightly, as if she was a small child talking nonsense. "I wouldn't bet on that. You better not get too brave, Kels. You know where that might get you." He dragged his finger across her neck, and grinned at her the same way he had in the hallway.
He dropped her arm, and backed away a few steps before turning around and walking the rest of the way.
Kelsey watched as he walked away. Her legs felt like they might buckle underneath her. She took a deep breath, and waited for him to be out of sight before she started, very quickly, back home. She needed to call Ryan. He was the only one who could help her now.
