THE TALE OF THREE OAKSA Chapter by NeiL ArandAMy work office has been grace by a decent size window that overlooks the walkway leading to the front main entrance of the federal building. It's a cut throat passage that leads quickly to the nearest employee parking lot. There were three young turkey oak that populated this narrow alleys as if the landscaper never factored the size of the tree when it's fully grown. The tree derived it's name from its leaves resembling the feet of a full grown turkey. It is one of the most sought out species of Oak known for its strength, durability and reddish color of leaves in autumn. Oaks are known to grow and last for quarter centuries and are resistant to many pest and disease that often befalls their predecessor - the Pine trees. Having a mature oak on someone's yard gives the property some type of nostalgic look and historic feel. It closely resembles the national tree of the Philippines - the Narra, when it comes to sturdiness, longevity and it's wood is highly price for furniture, cabinetry and classic flooring. Looking from my vantage point on the top floor. I wondered if the landscaper committed an oversight. The ample space is barely enough for one or two, but three is definitely a crowd. The trees were off for a good start when I first saw them years ago. The one on the rear, on the lee side of the building was slightly ahead of the two turkey trees that lag behind near my office window because of its east facing location. Then last week the tree suddenly withers. Looking closely as I pass them by. I noticed that the tree that has wilted had gotten a foot rot. A fungus that attacks the base of the tree roots which leads to its early demise. Like someone being rob of their youth at the zenith of their life. As I watch and reflect on these turn of events, the oaks trees could represents anyone or anything in our lives. It could be someone who is in for an early start because of their privileged position or they were there as a benefactor of someone's hard labor, even mishap. But that doesn't offer any guarantee that we are here for a long haul even when we are born and planted as an oak. Reflection: What are the Oaks in our lives that could give us a false sense of security ? by neil aranda © 2019 NeiL ArandAReviews
