FACELOOK

FACELOOK

A Chapter by NeiL ArandA
"

Some silly scribbled poem

"
Since its first debut in February of 2004

Facebook has overtaken Friendster

by storm in just a matter of months.

Now this social network turned giant

dwarf all other media's cover page

from newspaper to magazines.

What solely designed initially for connecting

has now evolved into something

much more sinister than merely

communicating or catching up

with some long lost friend, classmate,

relative or your ex

to a more subtle broadcasting

of a life we want to project.

Painting a perfect portrait of who we are

and how we want to be perceived

by people who view our profiles

and photos we post in public.

Facebook is a highly contagious social network

It’s life cycle and how it attach to its next host

is likened to a common cold.

When you like and share someone’s post

You tickle someone’s nose. Triggering

a chain reaction or a sneeze

The infected posts began trending

Going viral with every touch of the mouse

or tap of the screen. It could have stop

there if we covered our nose or adopt

Pilate's public hand washing.

This is how it first begin. It first triggered

by an innocent post followed by a curious look.

Here's how the etiology of this works;

"Look what I think, you better not blink

Look what I've achieved and the best choices I made

Look where I’ve been and the places I’ve seen

Look what I eat and the toppings in my plate

Look where I go and the people I know

Look what I do for the better tomorrow

Look what I got and now I’m a big shot. "

And now you know how you get hook

by someone Facebragging on Facebook …

Neil, this piece is not silly per se; to me, this is a relevant social commentary as it truthfully and visibly captured the silliness of our behavior on Facebook. I heard someone said that some people get high over the number of likes on their FB posts, which is why they keep on posting. These people who oftentimes resort to "facebragging” are usually the people who are feeling empty or longing for something. They need recognition; they need constant validation; they need FB likes in an effort to fill in the void they feel inside. Over the years, i've encountered these kind of people. At first, i was amused and then eventually i got annoyed.
