THE PAWN AND THE PEN

THE PAWN AND THE PEN

A Poem by NeiL ArandA
"

A mere pawn dreaming of a place, a promotion

"

I open my life

to the queen of the north

my heart I pledge

my sword shall bleed

But this pitiful quill

refuse to render

the coup de grace

the killer words

to end

this life long struggle

of ever attaining

a perfect form .

The queen of the south

mocks while I was pinned

unable to advance .

My vancura position doomed

to perpetual plateau .

Is this my fate ?

or I'm bound by creed

that I could never defeat ?

Novelties I searched

Knowledge Ì gained

I bluffed with words

but all to no avail ...

Like poets even pawns

have dreams of reaching

a Shakespearean ending

to immortalize our name

  but this ambitious quest

eludes me as well.

Though l have the will

but lack the words.

Hence I lay down my sword

and surrender my quill ...

To end this futile war

of ever penning

a perfect piece ...

I concede....

Author's Note

NeiL ArandA
Some just have it in them that it just flow without much effort. While the rest myself included wrestle with the wind.

Chess consists of Opening, Middlegame, and Ending . Queens Pawn opening is very solid and highly positional game. Works well against tactical and high ranking opponents.

In our home, in school, in the workplace, we are told not to settle for mediocrity. we must aim for perfection or excellence. It makes me think. In writing poetry, is there a yardstick for a poem to be called as a perfect piece? Is it the structure or form that makes it perfect? Or is it the substance? or the number of people who claimed to be moved by the piece?
I read your author's note, this piece somehow followed the three-part structure of the game of chess.

And I felt I was there in the novel :)
Thank you for sharing

I loved the last stanza's lines.

Grandmasters like poets dream
of reaching a Shakesperean ending
to immortalize our place
but this futile quest eludes me as well
Hence I lay down my sword
and surrender my quill ...
I have the will but I lack the words .
To win this war to ever achieve
the perfect piece ...

I concede....

I think you meant Shakespearean but
there were no mistakes you painted this write beautifully
I loved this because
it was more like a story.

Take care Benita
