There is nothing wrong with practicing spiritual disciplines.
Religions find their roots in seeking truth and choosing to live these truths in the practice of disciplined living.
Sadly, man perverts these truths by seeking power and control. Today, organized religions set policy, make financial goals, set political agendas, segments and isolates its members for better control...
Etc...
It no longer is about reaching to God. It is about showing off to everyone we are closer to God than they are.
Religions should focus on being vessels of Grace. We were asked to reach out to our fellow man with our hands and hearts acting as the loving hand of Christ. If we would touch the face of God all we need to do is touch those who suffer around us every day...
Sorry, I tend to get philosophical about the perversions of organized religions.
I am in flux about this topic... Peter and Paul did help organize "Churches", but they were structured to take care of their communities and support each other. Not to dictate a specific lifestyle...
Interesting topic however.

It's not about seeking His face anymore but its all about " Nickle and Noses " ... but its predicted David that a time where people and society will no longer listen or put up with sound doctrine. Preachers and pulpit will prophesy to tickle their member ear. An age of " apostasy " heralds an outcry for tolerance and compromise. The're no more absolute in a place and age of so much relativism. I appreciate so much your deep insight on this matter ....
We live in a society where religious intolerance is existing and this could be the reason why i barely read writes which directly tackle about faith (or perhaps, i am not reading much). Admirable, neil.

I do agree Gab that it could be labeled that way. However there is a fine line between religious intolerance and religious fanaticism. Often times society are very indifferent and divided about the role and message of the church and religion. Why do we have so many denominations. Is there such thing us absolute truth. When it comes to the issue of salvation, the common denominator will always be - GRACE. ...
