THE SPARROW'S LAMENT

THE SPARROW'S LAMENT

A Poem by NeiL ArandA
"

...

"
Of all the birds who would feel insecure,
It’s the sparrow!
Such its kind is synonymous with sorrow

Why would God made such poor little fellow?
It wish it should have been a swallow

Perhaps it envies the peacock with all its fluff
God endowed such creature would make it puff

It stares at the eagle in its lofty splendor
It wish it has the strength of the mighty condor

Birds of happiness and prestige; like the macaw
Birds of sadness and sorrow; a sparrow !

Surely the cycle of life is full of paradox
If it isn't so, it must be a joke

What have rich and poor people have in common?
Other than the latter doesn't have much mammon

Could it be, our Creator, showed others more favor ?
Like bird to people, was He impressed by their color ?

What's the difference between white feather or black ?
Why such a dull colored brown a drawback ?

I don't see a reason why a sparrow should be mocked
Just like any creature, God takes care of His flock.

Author's Note

NeiL ArandA
The sparrow is one of the most common birds on earth. Wherever you go you will be sure to see and hear them. The sparrow is not blessed with outstanding plumage, and in fact is hardly considered by men. Sparrows are not really worth much according to the world's standards and yet not a single one of them fall from the sky without God's sovereign knowledge . If He cares for the sparrow how much more does He cares for the one who are made in His own image .

Sometimes rhyme scheme could distract me from the main idea of the poem (like those delved on serious subject matter but use a “jolly rhyme scheme). In this case, the rhyme is impressive as it complemented the over-all theme of the poem.

True, the maya may not have the mighty built of an eagle but that does not stop it from flying in the eagle’s domain- the sky. It may not have the colorful feathers of the peacock but that dullness in color protects it from the hunter’s eyes. It may not have the cheerful attitude of the macaws but that is the reason why it is still flying free unlike the caged macaw.
You presented heavy issues, my friend: struggle, insecurity and discrimination (at least in my own interpretation) but I’m truly glad that you ended the piece in a hopeful, positive note.

i think there is much depth to this...

most of us are pretty common, much like the sparrow...other birds get more attention just like other humans do...but it does not make them better.

their sorrow is often masked behind celebrity, but for us it shows more because we have no celebrity to hide behind.

but we are all god's children, and worth just as much..

so we can smile, even if it is behind the tears.

Perfect ending, Neil.

This is a sort of reminder for everyone. Another inspiring piece. Keep writing, Neil!

Your sparrow shall fly someday Neil.. a very sorrowful poem, I agree with you, "I don't see a reason why a sparrow should be mocked" it is such a beautiful and free creature, at least we see it's grace..
