My Heart

My Heart

A Poem by Mark Daniels

And as the sun slowly sets on this day,
I end this lonely day in prayer.

I pray that those, whom I have touched today,
do not fall the same way I have: into despair and sadness.

I pray that those whom have seen me today
learn to keep their lives away from the way mine is: lonely and sad.

And as I sit here, in this dark, cold, and lonely room,
this dark, cold, and lonely room I call my heart.
I look for a light, a way out, but all I find is darkness.

My soul is the holder of the key, the key to my heart,
my heart that is also my prison.
And as I end my prayer, I think to myself,
"Did I think of everything to make other's lives better?
Better than mine so they don't find the same suffering I have?"

And suddenly, a thought raced through my mind.
"What if I help others? Help them through their lives,
so both turn out for the better.
Their lives and mine."

Then, and just then, did my searching come to a stop.
I found a light, a way out of my heart,
a way out of my prison.
