Chapter Two

Chapter Two

A Chapter by Blue Ivory

She was awoken by the sound of immense shouting and thumping, coming from the door to her house. The bell had stopped working two months ago. She recognized the voice to belong to her uncle, Martin. Just as she'd thought, he was there to pay his contribution to her family. His money was what she and her mother depended on, ever since her father died when she was 12. It was just enough to keep them alive, but really, it was all that he could do for them.

"How is she now?" he asked, as he handed her his coat. It was October, and beginning to get chilly outside.

"I wouldn't know. I just woke up. When I checked up on her last night, she was sleeping. She looked very frail..." she remembered how she was barely moving, after she said that.

"She's going to be alright." he said, putting a hand on her shoulder, "Now, I will be back in the evening, and I will bring a doctor with me-another one. The last one was obviously no help. You were right to call me last week. I'm sorry I couldn't get here sooner, but always tell me when she falls ill like that, okay? And Melissa...Take care of yourself." he looked her firmly in the eyes, in that last sentence. She nodded.

He handed her the money, and then followed her to her mother's bedroom. Julie had her eyes open. At the sound of them entering, she turned her head to face them. Thank God, she thought. Her mother looked miserable, though. She had no clue how to get her out of this hell hole. But she wanted to help.

Martin touched her forehead.

"She's burning!" he said.

She ran and fetched the medicine prescribed to her mother. Her uncle took it from her and gently fed it to Julie. He had always been affectionate towards her. Being her father's younger brother, he resembled him in both looks and personality. Watching him handling her mother made her smile faintly. She missed her father dearly...

Melissa wanted to make her uncle breakfast, in return for all of his generosity, but he refused-despite her insisting-and hurried out the door. Then he came back, drank the glass of juice she had made for him, and walked back out, giving her a quick kiss on her forehead.

He was a caring man.

You have added more intrigue to the story with these additional characters. Just one more friendly thought. Maybe some expansion on the details. like when you said "Her uncle took it from her and gently fed it to Julie." You could add. "He had to assist by holding up her head since she was too weak for even that simplest of actions."

But I do like the story.
