two for flinchingA Poem by William James McPhee the shock of a memory should not
cause you to flinch... visions
which only you can see... hazed
across the reality of the world
which for a time stops breathing,
suspended till your mind can
rationalize the violence.
a fist to the side of the jaw.
a floor rapidly approaching.
a pair of workboots, dirt caked
after a hard days work.
then like a special effect, the
world spins forward, motion
blurs, moments lost.
yet his voice echoes still; "you
got two ears and one mouth,
son."
then in walking out my bedroom
door; "think before speaking."
but i am not that nine year old
child anymore...
i tell myself...
though i know not for the
last time.
