PROGRESS?

PROGRESS?

A Poem by The Elder

When I look out my windows

what do I see?

I wish what I'd see

was tree after tree,

and green grass and bushes

all growing tall

and not scores of trailors

replacing it all.

Right here, where I stand,

roamed panther and deer

which Seminole hunters

tracked without fear.

If those hunters could see

what has happened here.

I know they'd be shedding

many a tear.

Their beautiful forest now

steel and concrete

and trees seperated

by scores of feet,

The cool, clear water of

river and stream

now polluted with trash

and other debris.

I realize that progress is

needed today.

but, oh, what a horrible

price we have paid!

I used to have trees surronding my home and street. Now there are houses upon houses filling it all up, including a brick wall outside my window where I used to feed birds and squirls. No one feels the beat of your poem more then I my friend. I feel i have lost so much. All memories of places I grew up and played are just that now. Those places are all gone. This all took place in a matter of five years. It was like the land rush. Where it once was quiet, is now noise. Progress is indeed painful in so many ways. I can't imagine what the american indian must have gone through, being shoved onto reservations and then finally having their way of life become extinct.
A great piece my friend, thanks for sharing it with us.

Beautiful and sad and absolutely true! I hate seeing and watching as nature dissipates; soon she will be no more but potted plants on a porch or tilled lands for inseticided crops. Thank you for sharing!

Native Americans, they say, lived on this continent for 35,000 years without causing significant environmental impact. The men went hunting and fishing, the women did all of the work, and us Europeans thought we could improve on that? Ha!
This poem is a gem.

That is very true what you speak in this poem. Everything that was is now damaged by the ever growing population of humanity. Mother nature slowly is wasting away because of others so called dreams of advancement. I enjoyed reading this poem it was really good.

This speaks so much truth and flows as smoothly as those unpoluted streams used to flow. Very well penned poem with a great theme too.

A good write, the area where I live is not as bad, we still have trees and hills, a small town in Massachusetts. if you stay away from any city, we see wild life in our backyard, a bear not long ago in my son's yard, it was put asleep and taken out, I have 4 grandsons sharing the backyard. God Bless

Soooooo true. All I can see is nature...from every window of my home. Trees, grass, fields, bushes, wild flowers, rabbits, horses, sheep, cows,. How blessed am I ?? We don't always appreciate what is on our doorstep..but I do !! I am just a country girl and could sooo never live in a city although I absolutely love to visit. Your write here is very well put together capturing sad thoughts of long ago and of how things have turned out and of how things could be on our planet, but time would need to stand still.
Thanks for sharing.

Yes, such a sadness that we have lost so much and yet, we do not realize the price that we have paid. People are so materialistic...it is sad. This was a great write.
